They were slightly left off the tee. The 9th has always fascinated me. Gene Hamm designed it as what I would consider a perfect par 5. A large stream runs the length of the fairway along the right with a steady row of pine trees down the left. It's a dogleg left from the original tees. You can bite off as much as you like down the left but if you're not long enough, or a bit too far left, your second will be blocked out by the pine trees. Bailing out to the right brings the water in play. As you can see from the picture, the green is 8 paces deep, elevated about 12 feet from the fairway and plays over a small pond. The membership decided in the early 80's, it was too difficult a hole so they built a new tee near the stream on the right and turned it into a long par 4. The new tee completely eliminated the dogleg and almost completely took the water out of play. Given the depth of the green, trying to hold a long iron approach is next to impossible. It's the worst hole on the golf course as a result! Several of us members are trying to get the board to consider rebuilding the original tee and returning this hole to what it was meant to be! By the way, the house in the foreground is for sale if anyone is interested. Slight dogleg left with the Windmill on the lake to the left. The second is the par 4 5th...my playing partners for the day playing the very forward tees. The guy hitting is 82 and played pretty well, not long, but mostly very straight. The third is the par 4 15th. Parred that one again today with a 1 putt. The fourth is the par 3 14th. Plays to length despite the slight downhill. I botched this one. The last is the par 3 12th. Longest par 3 on the course and plays every bit of it. This is my ball...184 yard 4 iron and I made the putt for birdie.
