This was a few weeks ago .. on a nice day that our regular course was closed my wife and I decided to head down to the South Shore of Long Island to an 18-hole Par 3, inside a state park by the beach. It's at the west end of a barrier island .. part of Fire Island National Seashore, actually .. between the ocean and the Great South Bay on the inside.

RMsatview.jpg.d01e9f74032da8538861ad7ebc67d7b2.jpg
^ Par 3 course is just to the left of where it says "Robert Moses Field 2"

The course can be a bit, well, scruffy in places and the greens are bumpy and slow but it's such a fun and unique golfing spot - and really great wedge target practice with holes ranging from 60-100 yds; most in the 70-85 yd range. Typically, as there was on this day, there's an onshore breeze coming in off the ocean so as the course meanders around the wind is coming at you from different directions. And it's only $8 for Seniors!

... you're not taking my picture, are you? 🙂

Front 9:
6 / 9 greens
2 of 3 up & down attempts

Back 9:
5 / 9 greens
2 of 4 up & down attempts (1 chip-in)

Total:
11/18 greens ~ 61%
(- was hoping to achieve ~ 75%; missed long-left a bunch of times...)
4/7 u&d's ~ 57%
(- ok happy enough with that)

Not spectacular but way WAY better vs two seasons ago last time out there!

One of the best courses I played was out on Long Island - Cherry Creek Golf Links (https://www.cherrycreeklinks.com/) - SO MUCH FUN.  Really hard course, thick rough (literally lost my first tee shot in the rough JUST off the fairway...it was crazy), but a great, great time.  Long Island has so many great courses, kind of hard to go wrong with any of them, but this par-3 you played looks like a blast!

Yeah thx - really fun!! Have not played Cherry Creek - I believe it's out by Riverhead, close to an hour drive East from here - and they have second companion 9. Have played another funky little but also lotta fun 9 hole Par 3 a little further East from Riverhead, on the North Fork, called The Cedars.

But yeah LI is loaded with courses .. lot are private but still many good public ones around! Oh and there's also a Top Golf but I haven't been out there yet....

Played a quintessential New England golf course in Paxton MA (west of Worcester MA) on a beautiful blue spring day...

IMG_2468.jpeg.6ea9e6676124cdf883df2b8ef781f879.jpeg

There were multiple families of geese all with little ones and they were letting me know when I got a little too close...

IMG_2475.jpeg.baa0c7074d47f49c863fd1529856fcbb.jpegIMG_2476.jpeg.99eb6290e8ffaf31a9fb4285e6a1de1f.jpeg

This is one of the hardest shots for me. 210 to the flag and a forced carry over water. I hit a good one and went about 15 feet beyond the pin but these shots always make me nervous.

IMG_2470.jpeg.34ddb111a60e2deed6c8cc7fbc7a845c.jpeg

One of the hardest par 3's I've played in New England. Uphill all the way. 205 to carry the bunker. 211 to the pin. I've hit everything from 6i (wind behind) to choked-down driver (wind in my face). Ended up in the bunker in front on this day.

IMG_2474.jpeg.cc15fd9ea35a0dec5ee8d03908919202.jpeg

One of my favorite golf course photos I've ever taken. This course is very picturesque. If it was anywhere near Boston it'd be exclusively private.

IMG_2471.jpeg.fd0bf6102718f5ee87a7cb61c5b83435.jpeg

There are a few holes like this with big ski style slopes in front of the green which makes club selection difficult. You can't see it but this is about a 60 foot drop.

Had a great time. Played some good golf and some terrible golf. We never threatened winning our flight but we did have the high score in our flight today so we made a few bucks.

As you can see we encountered a wide range of wildlife. We missed the manatee. It was in the Bayou on the back nine while we were playing a match on the front.

No sand cranes? The alligator looks happy maybe there's a reason for the missing crane?

Got a chance to play this incredibly beautiful and very challenging - 69.0/130 from the White tees @ 5466 yds! - private course near me.

The property borders on the Long Island Sound .. there are two amazing but ridiculous the first time you're on them holes that parallel the water.

And a few water views....

A slope rating of 130 at 5500 yds  wow - that's a tough course.

Sea Island - seaside course - this place is the nicest course I've ever played; pics don't do it justice

How did you like playing it? I have always imagined those courses to be quite difficult.

loved it. we played the tips and I didn't find it too difficult. the water sneaks in to the fairway a bit more than you expect on certain holes and you have be aware of it. my best round was at plantation.
you need to be a good ball striker out there. the holes are long and the greens are tough - fast with subtle breaks that you can't see from behind the hole.
bunkers were big but the sand was pure and easy to hit out of.

it's well worth a trip. 3 very nice courses and relatively affordable.

Braver man than me. Looks to be pushing 6,900 yds at sea level. SHEEEEEEEEESH! 220 yd par 3 and a 460 yd par 4. Ouch.

EDIT: AND IT IS A PAR 70. That plays more like 7,000 yds or more. Cowardly me would be back at 6,200 yds and feeling perfectly fine.

wanted to get the FULL experience lol... there are quite a few tee boxes to choose from (5?) ... the guy I went with is a stick and plays over 100 rounds per year, but yeah, there were some gnarly approach shots!
