Getting to the end of the fall season ... big wind/rain storms blowing through and dropping leaves like crazy.

Great day with beautiful blue skies and bright sunshine but with the glare and the leaves sometimes you can hit a superb drive in the fairway and not find the ball....

I was paired up with another "golfNow" person (that's him in the cart) and we rode in the same cart together (can't walk before 12 on Sunday) and it is always awkward to start but things loosened up after a bit.  He volunteers to do transportation at some PGA tournaments in the area and had some good stories about Rickie, Phil, Paulina G., etc.

Where did you play Stoker? Sorry we couldn't hook up this year - let's plan on doing some goffin' next season!

Pensacola CC today in an FSGA one-day event. This is the par 3, 18th hole, which was about 135 yards to a front hole location. We had a 2 club wind right in our face off of the bay. If you miss right your ball is in the bay, so I opted to aim at the flag with a 7 iron and see what happens. I probably had a draw on the shot that the wind took 30 yards left of the green. In my foursome we had two balls on the green and two balls to the left of the left bunker. Both guys 3-putted from above the hole. It took me two chips to put the ball 3 feet below the hole to walk off with bogey after making the putt. The other guy who landed his tee shot next to me bladed his chip over the green and just short of the water. I think he walked off with a 6.

I played with a member of thia course who said the greens were running 10.5 on the stimp meter. If you were above the hole it was almost impossible to make a putt. Just blow on the ball and it went 20 feet. I’ve never seen so many chips just run out and keep going like nothing was going to stop it. I rarely rate a course a 10 on a scale of 10 but this course was that. Fastest greens I’ve putted on in years.

Oh and the par 4, 17th hole was 419 yards for me. I ripped my best drive into a 2 club wind and still had 185 out. So I pulled 4 wood and landed it 15 feet from the hole. I was told that the wind we experienced was just a normal day off of Pensacola Bay. That made what was a 6,500 yard course feel like 7,000 yards easy. I mean, I was hitting 5 iron from 164, which is normally about a 7 iron for me.

I was also told that Bubba Watson is a member here and plays this course all the time, so I would guess they keep the greens at this speed for him so he can practice on greens similar to what is on Tour.

More wind stories for you. They had a driveable par 4 of about 300 yards, which was into the wind. I took driver and still had 100 yards in. The wind was just brutal.

Took my SIL around the course today and stopped by our eagles nest. The young ones must have been kicked out - haven't seen them in months. DSC_0074.JPG

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of New England had there season wrap up meeting at Whitinsville GC.  It's the only 9 hole course on Golfweek's top 100 and well deserved.  What a joy to play!!
