See??!!?? Told ya....
(..and I have my contributions into Untappd to prove it!)

So about a month ago now .. but on a Thursday eve .. wandered into one of the fine local eateries that offer a nice selection of craft brews of various types; the taps are, of course, on a constantly changing basis.

So in the spirit of NBT, and in a departure from the usual search (more like: holy grail quest) for a "better" IPA, I opt to try a Russian Imperial Stout - which, full disclosure - I've sampled the type before, but .. in this particular case .. it is "..brewed with organic raw cacao nibs and ugandan vanilla beans"...

NBT@Sapsuckers.thumb.jpg.55f20e6854b65e7a00558ace17be8f52.jpg

No kidding! ..zoom in on the lower-right of the menu and check out the description of Root & Branch's "Big White Cloud".

Anyway, you can see I got through this one rather easily. The chocolate and vanilla tones were noticeable but no way over-powering; no sticky sweetness but really a nicely blended, nicely balanced delight of flavors.

But totally a "dessert" beer.

But totally yummo.

It's time for the IPA craze to come to a halt. I love IPA's, but it's getting ridiculous. There are soooooo many IPA's with this and that in them, non filtered, "hazy"... vanilla, chocolate, raspberry, blood orange,  grapefruit, etc..... Enough!

I can't Like this enough!!!  So I had to Love it.

On the street out of our golf course, the only bar is an Applebee's.  My wife and I frequent it a lot.  We know all of the bartenders and managers.  They don't have many taps, and beers get rotated through them.  Right now they have Bud Light, Coors, Blue Moon, and 5 IPAs.  They used to have a Sam Adams seasonal, but it's been replaced by another IPA.  Who needs 5 IPAs when there are only 8 taps???

Yeah, I used to be able to ask for an IPA and it would most likely be dark, hoppy and bitter. And good. Now..... I have to ask about "juicy" or "citrus" or "floral" or etc. etc. It's literally getting harder and harder to go out and find the type of IPA I prefer....

As you know, I am not particularly fond of IPAs, and not at all fond of citrus, floral ones.  Hop Valley Citrus Mistress from Springfield, OR tastes like dishwater to me, and it's been on tap at that Applebees for a year now.  Some IPAs are certainly better than others, and I will occasionally have one but I still prefer a stout/porter to any IPA.

Yep the juicy / citrusy / floral thing is what's popular these days....
(Like disco music and garish clothing were back in the 70s .. hopefully this current fad will fade, too....)

Anyone try any of the new collab brews between Bruery Terreux and Dogfish Head?

https://www.brewbound.com/news/the-bruery-and-dogfish-head-collaborate-on-3-foeder-aged-ales

I'm a huge fan of both these brewers so I can't wait to try anything they've worked on together.

Bruery Terreux is out of Anaheim Ca.  Their specialty is sours and hot damn are they some of the best of that category I've ever had.

Closest I've gotten to a sour so far - sorry, Dave! - is Lagunitas' "Aunt Sally" which they descibe as...

"A unique dry-hopped sweet tart sour mash ale"

Hmmm. Lots of stuff going on there and definitely a "unique" flavor, but cannot say I was too crazy about it...

I've mentioned before I'm a big fan of the microbrew craft beer movement .. even tho I don't like many of the currently popular "citrus", "fruit" or "floral styles .. but you get a chance to randomly explore new offerings...

IMG_20190608_151426540.thumb.jpg.3280212e5dffd06959836ea475f11e57.jpg

You look on the shelves at the distributor and you see quite a colorful profusion of very creative label art!

These aren't all new-to-me; eg. I've had Jai Alai and Massive before, and other beers from Spider Bite and Flying Dog.

A couple are new and are local including "Green Room", second from the left, where the label can be peeled from the thin aluminum can, and looks like...

And, yeah, it's pretty tasty 🤙

OK, it's not Thursday... so What??  I'm old and forget what day it is half the time!!

A new beer for me from an old haunt...  Mcmenamin's in Corvallis, OR  Across the street from the Chemistry Building at Oregon State University where I spent 4 years back in the 1960's.  At the time it was a coffee/donut shop where I hung out before classes.

They were out of my usual quaffer, their Irish Stout.  I talked with the Brewmaster, and he said I should try this new Brown.  I did.  I think this may be my new goto except on St. Patrick's Day.

Stir It Up Smoked Brown (Nitro)

The Cherrywood Smoked Brown is sure to provide a unique drinking experience.  You'll be met by smoked malt flavor which quickly fades to a smooth and clean finish.  A small amount of hops were used to give this beer a slight bitterness that doesn't overpower the malt profile.  This beer is perfect for a quiet night by the fire, so little darlin' Stir It Up and enjoy!

Malts: 2-Row, Crystal 40, Kiln Coffee Malt, Chocolate Malt, Victory, Cherrywood Smoked Malt

Hops:  US Golding, Cascade

ABV:  5.42   IBU:   35
