Can't remember Titleist ever doing a limited edition special - anyone else chime in on that??

The ever-popular Titleist 716 AP1 irons will soon be available in a limited edition dark PVD Smoke finish ($112.50/club steel, $125/club graphite). Limited to 500 sets, the Limited Edition Smoke finish was inspired by the dark finishes available on Vokey SM6 wedges, as a number of players have embraced the reduced glare and more compact appearance the non-chrome look provides.

Josh Talge, VP of Marketing, Titleist Golf Clubs, comments:

"We're introducing the Smoke finish as a test run because golfers have been asking us for it," Talge said. "We've seen a trend in players gravitating toward the darker finishes in our Vokey SM6 wedges and many of them have asked if we'll ever bring those types of finishes to our iron line. Smoke is our first experiment. Not only does it have a great look, but for many golfers it will also make the club appear smaller at address. It's really a great option for those players who want all the benefits of a game improvement iron but want to look down and see something more slim and compact."

Like the standard 716 AP1 irons, the Limited Edition Smoke version features an extreme 360-degree undercut cavity and a large, thin face, for enhanced ballspeed and distance. Other features include significant use of tungsten weights for improved MOI and forgiveness as well as a wide variety of fitting options.

The new Limited Edition Smoke irons will be available starting on 3/24/17 in the US only. The cost is the same as the standard finish version of the 716 AP1 irons.

I am actually surprised they went with the AP1's to try this on. Unless they are trying to follow Callaway and have their GI Irons in black then it makes sense. I think the AP2's would have looked a lot better in the black

Hmm I don't know what the normal cost per club is, but if I'm buying now I probably go with the Smoke. That said I thought Titleist was the big boy on the block who didn't need special addition stuff.

Well there was the C16? released last year which was kind of limited.   

 

But I really like these, having just gotten some AP1's in August, I'll wait and see if the 716 AP2's are offered in these.  If so it won't take long for the trigger to be pulled.

Will the smoke finish wear? I bought the Titleist SM wedges in blue (limited edition) a few years back and the finish wore out very quickly, quick enough to give me buyers remorse.

I have the SM6 wedges in chrome, but I have a couple friends who have them in black finish and they say it has held up very well.   One of them practices a lot and there is just a small wear spot near the sweet spot, but I wouldn't call it anything that bothers me.

I'd just like to take a moment to welcome Titleist to the last 4 years of golf club design.  Make whatever you want, but then offer a black version a year later to make it fresh.

 

Bottom line is that it works and that's why companies keep doing it.  I just didn't expect Titleist to jump on the bandwagon.

Judging from where you live I would say you have the same conditions I have salt and sand. Those kind of conditions will wear a black finish out in a heartbeat. Some guys I know it bothers  but me I could care less as long as it performs like it should.

Kind of an "Un-Titleist" move to be honest.  Callaway and TMag...yeah I expect them to do this but not the almighty Titleist.  There's nothing really wrong with it, though.  I see this as them trying to remain somewhat relevant in the mind of consumers when their 716 line might be getting downplayed by all the newer launches from other OEMs more recently.

 

I demoed and reviewed these last year for another golf site and they were hands down one of the best GI irons I hit all year.  So if you're giving me an option in black then sign me up!!
