Putter that you Love to Hate or Hate to Love

oaks

So I was looking at my bag and my collection of putters over the weekend and was trying to figure out why some of my putters work better for me than others.  We all have some putters that are prettier than others, but also all seem to have one or two that continually gravitate back into our bags, no matter how hard it is for us to try and shake our bag free of them.

For me I have tried and I have tried to get my handmade custom TP Mills back into my or even my Odyssey Works Tank 7, but no matter what I do or how much I don't want it to - my Daddy Long Legs works and looks comfortable to me.  I hate the putter when I just pick it up, but behind the ball it works and I have had the most success with it in the long run.

Who else has a putter like this?

I have many putters. Some I have tried but they never made the cut for one reason or another. Others are older models I've retired. Generally, I never go back to an older putter once it's been put out to pasture. I stick with a putter usually for a very long time.

I've gone through maybe 6 putters. I've stuck with the Bettinardi C03 because of its looks and feel. Cut it down and put a superstroke grip on it. Jury is still out on it as I may have cut it too short now and I'm not sold on the larger putter grip, plus I've been hot and cold with it. One week I couldn't miss a putt, then next week I couldn't hit the side of a barn. Picked up a brand new Nike Method M5-10 as an impulse purchase. Still something about the C03 keeps it in my bag.

I have a thing for carbon steel blade putters with a flow neck. I currently have a Scotty Cameron Circa '62 #1 in the bag.

I also have a Studio Design #1 and #2 that come and go depending on a consistent miss left or right (1/4 shaft of offset difference between the three putters, otherwise identical specs).

Things I don't like:

Anything with an insert

Anything with a cavity

I currently game a Cleveland TFI 1.0, and I'm starting to really enjoy it. I've had it for a while. I recently ordered a Ping Sigma G, that I am still waiting to receive, because I loved how it felt after being able to demo it. However, as of the past couple weeks, I've been rolling my TFI so well, I'm scared I won't want to change once my Ping comes in. I hope that isn't the case.

I have gone thru a lot of putters over the years but, the MLA is my fav. Even more than the Scotty I had years ago. The Yes Groove Tube I have is the funkiest looking putter I have ever owned though.

I love the look of a heel shafted blade and can't putt a lick with them and yes I own a bunch of them.  Thought I would hate my Scotty Newport 2 dual balance at 35" and turns out the putter is money.  I own a room full of flatsticks that were good ideas when I bought them.

I only have 4 putters.     and one of them was the Nike that I tested for MGS last year.  It didn't make it in my bag, so I am stuck with my Boccieri Heavy Putter that I found for $40 in a Golfsmith used bin about 8 years ago.  I like the weight and it fits my putter stroke, but it is not a pretty putter.  It's even pink since it's a 32" ladies putter.  I thought it would look better with a custom putter grip, but putting lipstick on the pig didn't help.  Still searching for that heavy sexy lady.

One of my hobbies is refurbishing and customizing old Ping putters.  I love the history, the influence, and the wide range of designs.  But I can't putt with them.  Instead I play a Futura.  Essentially the opposite of classic design.

Yes! Putter from the Adams years. I won it in a church raffle. I think it was some form of penance.

I buy older Acushnet bullseye putters. Sand them smooth. Get a green/blue patina on them with salt and ammonia. Clear coat. Then replace with new grip. I absolutely love the feel of brass. Laugh if you want but I get a lot of compliments for a putter I invested $30 in.

I played & play with putters 99.999999% people balk at.. Boccieri Heavy putters. Just putt well with em. Currently using a H1 center shafted belly cut down to 35". 2nd favorite is the L3

OMG!  Another Heavy Putter user!!  Mine is a women's 32" C2-DF clocking in at 900 grams.  So easy to make a pendulum swing, but it is not a looker.

I have the old Odyssey; old as the hills now. Had to go look to see that it is a Dual Force 662. Went through a couple early on and the Cameron too got traded off somewhere as this went back in in short order. The love hate is the B60 in the closet. It is the only other one still around as it is a thing of beauty. As much as Ide like to put her back in service once in awhile there she stays, tempermental thing she is.

Frank Thomas of aldila fame who did the recent Wilson Driver promo has had a putter out for awhile. Saw one once and would try one of these myself as many of the hot ones today may very well stem from this.

Oh my gosh, do I remember putting with the flange Bullseye!!

I may be using the ugliest putter ever made....and Oddessy Backstryke blade.  I keep trying new putters but I just make more with that strange tool!

I love that putter! I seem to make every putt at the store. Kinda funky looking for sure, but it worked for me. Not sure why I didn't jump on it though..

"So I was looking at my bag and my collection of putters over the weekend and was trying to figure out why some of my putters work better for me than others."

I've talk with people about this a time or two; why one works best.

It seems to me there is more to "looks" with putters than meets the eye(s).

Of course they have to look good to you, until that goes out the door for the tool that works, and then it seems it is down to weight, or feel, and results. But what me and some crones found to be true for the most part is that the putter that lines up with your eye(s) best, given where you play the ball from is the one people go to time after time.

For example, I putt with my head/left eye over the ball. FWIW I have always been able to putt, and finding and keeping the putter I have was a result of it being easiest to "see" for me. Squaring it up and being able to stroke it up and down the line is what my putter does for me, my eye, and my ball.

I bought a Odyssey Works Versa 7 last year.  It's really helped my aim and I tend to make good strokes with it.

However...

I've had a lot of trouble getting the feel of it.  I think either the swingweight on it is pretty light, or the face is relatively explosive.  Whatever it is, I started 3-putting a lot and quite often my second putt would be over 10 feet.  There were two rounds I had over 40 putts where traditionally I come in around 32-34.

For the two rounds I've played this year it's been quite good - only 3 putted once.  But that may be because the greens are really slow, making distance control much easier.

So yeah... it's been a love-hate relationship.
