Like others I'm also dealing with the counterweighted putter issue.  Once I can upload the data from my first round I'll be interested to see if it picked up any of the strokes, despite me not having the tag in place.  Game Golf is hit or miss in picking up putts without the tag in place, as well.

I received an email promptly this morning from Shot Scope indicating that the course I played last Friday had been uploaded.  Unfortunately, this course recently changed the scorecard and hole configuration and it doesn't look like Shot Scope got the update.  Game Golf didn't either and I had to email them a while back, too, so I'll follow up with the Shot Scope team tomorrow.  That aside, I did notice a few of my shots were a bit off.  For example, the first hole I played every shot was like 10 yards to the left from where I actually was.  Easy fix but kind of odd.  Looks to be very isolated, thankfully.

I'm going to get in at least one if not two rounds this week with the Shot Scope so more to come.

I got my first 18 in last weekend... it all worked out surprisingly well... but I kept forgetting to collect pin after every hole, so I'm sure that also contributed to the weird readings I had.

Anyways, no more spoilers, wait for Part 2! :D

Morning all ---

Received this update from Gavin Dear of Shot Scope - he's been reading your comments and wanted to add the following regarding counterweighted putters:

"We are looking in to this, it seems that there is not a standard key system for counter balanced putters similar to adjustable drivers. This is making it very hard to build a solution. It seems that anything which is taped outside the width of the putter grip will most likely be deemed non-conforming.

At the moment, we are testing a system for double sided tape (we have some really strong stuff) and it seems to work well. Once the testing is complete we will offer a solution which will most likely include 3 Putter tags."

It would seem just changing a few lines of code could also potentially be a solution. Since the gps is already on your wrist, Shot Scope could do away with the putter tag all together and have users simply "putt collect" via the "pin collect" button system. Shot Scope already has a simple left-handed configuration app slider. Why not add a tag-less putter option?

I envisage the following protocol: User pairs wrist unit to phone and selects tag-less putter option within Shot Scope app. Tag-less putter configuration alters button function as follows; button one marks location of initial putt, button two marks location of second putt, etc; power/zero button becomes "pin collect". This data collection methodology would be slightly less passive but might help exclude some pesky variables.

Much thanks to Shot Scope for keeping tabs on the MGS review happenings.

Just a quick update. I have played 2 rounds of 9 holes and one 18 hole round. My Shot Scope is not not working properly. The first 9 and 18 I edited to correct many of the shots. Clubs aren't reading that they were swung correct clubs are not being read. And here is my last 9 hole round.

Shot Scope Screen Shot.jpg

I was -7 for the other 2 rounds. I did give Gavin a email this morning to see if there was something I could do to fix the issues.  He replied in 10 mins and said they are looking into it as this is not how it is supposed to work. Customer Service so far is great hopefully this is just a glitch than can be fixed.

I'll be playing my 3rd round with Shot Scope this Sunday. Hopefully I don't forget to pin collect to see if the readings are normal.

I want to make sure I do everything correctly on my side before I hit up their support (which I've done twice already, and both times got a reply within 10 minutes).

I have a second quick update.  Gavin got back to me yesterday early morning and gave me a few tips to help solve the inaccurate data collection issue I am having. I went out last night following his advice and it still did not work correctly. This morning before I had a chance to email Gavin an update he emailed me saying that he had noticed my round and there was no change. My wristband was most likely defective and that he had already sent out a new Shot Scope that I should expect hopefully by Saturday/Monday.  Gavin has been great to work with.I am impressed with the customer service.

Not at all, Copied straight from Email.

We have had this before and it can be due to a number possibilities:

  • Shot Scope is worn too high up the wrist
  • Ion bands/jewellery is worn on the same arm as Shot Scope
  • Golfer grips right at the end of the club and tag is too far away to be registered
  • Shot Scope is in left hand setting/right hand setting (can be seen when connected to the app) – it should be in the hand setting that you will wear the Shot Scope on.
  • Shot Scope is worn on the wrong wrist, should be on the glove hand of the golfer.

I also asked about how far away the tag could be from the wristband and he said 7 to 10 cm depending on angle.

Gavin has also been working with me to isolate the source of some proximity exceptions in my data reports.

We decided that using my putter to finish (tap down) pitch mark repairs can potentially create erroneous data points; more specifically this happens when holding the putter in the same hand as the wrist unit. In my case Shot Scope HQ was getting extra putt location readings all over the greens as my tendency is to fix every pitch mark I can find. That said, the system scored my 9 hole test correctly and the overwhelming majority of proximity data points were still well within the civilian C/A GPS signal parameters (+/- 3yds). I am playing a full 18 Saturday morning and will be mindful of the pitch mark repair tip, hopeful the adjustment will tighten up my performance reports a bit.

Not sure whether the other testers are experiencing similar minor proximity issues but thought the pitch mark repair tip might be helpful. Let me know if any of the prior requires additional clarification.

I didn't face the pitch mark repair "bug" since I was constantly forgetting to pin collect.

However, I did notice some shots registered in the middle of the cart parth.

a. I wasn't on the cart path that day

b. I would never hit from there

Now, we got different types of paths... some get pretty bumpy with your push cart. So I was wondering what actually triggers a reading? Is it the vibration when the wrist band is too close? What about when you slide the club bag in the bag?

I'll be a little rougher with my push cart and bag this Sunday and see if I can duplicate the misreadings.

Although I'm enjoying reading about everyone's experience so far... I'd have serious doubts about purchasing this device. Or any other device along these lines. I was an initial early adopter of Game Golf and found out right quick how much hassle it was to use. I ended up selling mine. (I know there have been many improvements since.)

I am starting to read of the limitations of this device also. Some of you guys have to figure out a "work-around" for this or that. Inaccurate data, etc. There are a lot of devices such as this on the market these days. At this time again.... I don't think the technology is quite there yet. I haven't liked the bulky look of this device since I first saw a picture of it on someone's wrist.

I have faith and confidence that eventually the technology will improve and some company will get it right. When I play golf I don't want to be thinking at all about a device i'm wearing or have to fiddle around with. I've always envisioned some link between the ball and the club where you don't even know it's there. Your clubs look and play the same as does the ball. But some how/way they're connected electronically. It will come.

Hey Plaid!

the only action you have to take is press a button after each hole to register the # of putts. That's it! The rest is pretty much cruise control and play as you normally would.

To be fair, the misreadings could be caused by my own mistake (no pin collect, so the device thinks I'm still playing the same hole). But give us a chance to test it thoroughly and perhaps you'll be surprised!

I think Part 2 will start appearing in about 2 weeks and you'll find more details to it.

Hey Plaid!

the only action you have to take is press a button after each hole to register the # of putts.

I might be a little quick to pull the trigger at times. I don't mean any disrespect to any of the reviewers. It's not any easy job I know.

Everyone has been doing an honest and thorough review so far in my opinion.

Keep it up guys.

As a Game Golf user for the past 2+ years I can say that Shot Scope offers much less "work" while on the course using their device compared to Game Golf.  The Pin Collect on the greens is a new thing that I'll have to adapt to but it will only take a round or two to make that routine.  Yes, there are some bugs to be worked out but so far Shot Scope has been great to work with from my perspective and what appears to be that of the other reviewers, as well.

I'm playing in a tournament round tomorrow morning and will be using the Shot Scope.  Looking forward to seeing some of the data tomorrow afternoon when I get home.

No disrespect taken, Plaid. We just want to give the people at Shot Scope a fair chance before dropping the final verdict.

If you are right, we'll let you know for sure! :D

Wrapped up my 2nd 18-hole round with the Shot Scope yesterday and went in to check/edit the round tonight.  I was a bit surprised to see 4 holes completely missing shots.  Thankfully the round is pretty fresh in my memory but it was rather annoying having to not just add a tee shot but add every single shot on those holes.  Admittedly, I noticed tonight that the tag for my Driver wasn't in yesterday so I know now why the tee shots were missing on those holes.  I had to re-grip a new shaft I'm trying out and just forgot to put the tag back in before I packed up the car.  That's on me, but the difference in that regard between Shot Scope and Game Golf is that Game Golf would have detected that shot regardless and allowed me to edit it later.  Shot Scope, however, didn't detect the shot and instead didn't even record a single shot with any club on those holes.  That's a huge miss IMO.

Obviously more to come as I get into the Stage 2 part of the review but I thought I'd share that observation.

I did my 2nd 18 today and I didn't miss a single pin collect. When I tried to sync the round with my phone, got the error: we having some technical issues right now and are working to solve it.

That's fine, I thought. I'll try again.

Then to my surprise my round had disappeared. Looked in my app, not there. Tried to sync again, no new rounds found.

So I guess I'll wait for Easter weekend to play 18 again

So guess what... I didn't contact Shot Scope... and today, out of nowhere I get an email from Rachael apologizing for the disappeared round yesterday and it should now be in my account.

Despite the small inconvenience, these guys know what customer service is... and I didn't even have to open a ticket!

I got my new Shot Scope, took it out yesterday for a quick 9. Working much better. Didn't miss a shot and seems to be accurate to where i was on the course. Glad to be able to do an accurate test now.

Had an issue last couple of rounds with the old course configuration being loaded in Shot Scope.  Sent them an email and they updated it pretty quickly.  Unfortunately it didn't update the two rounds I had loaded.  Although, it really doesn't matter because all of the stats remained the same anyhow.

So far, like other reviewers, I've been impressed with the customer service and their sense of urgency.
