This is Strange

On Friday evening I had the freakish injury I ever encountered. I did my typical warm-up, concluding with about four drives that I deliberately "flip" which creates a very high drive that, if missed, will miss right, ideal for two consecutive par-4 doglegs on that particular nine. I stepped to the first tee and crushed a drive, but felt something snap in my right (trailing) wrist. The second shot was a short pitch, but very uncomfortable, ground contact was painful. The second hole is a 170 par-3 into a 15mph wind. I opted to hit a hard five, and when I hit the ground howled in pain. Great shot, but now i know I have a problem. For the rest of the nine, despite knowing the wrist was going to react, I drove the ball better than I have all year. Not only was I more accurate, but I was noticeably longer. My average is 265-280 depending upon the temperature and roll. I could not hit an iron to save my life, as the wrist would not allow it, so I was playing pitch and run or similar shots off the deck. A phone call to my ortho guy resulted in me not playing this weekend, and as I write I have an appt later today. His best guess based on symptons is a sprain/tear of the extensor carpal ulnar tendon, but its only a guess. Obviously, I am wondering how in the hell it happened. My best hypothesis is the violent deliberate flips does place a lot of strain on the ECU tendon, but that is kind of irrelevant since what's done is done

However, I am dying to figure out why the club that has been my nemesis for over three weeks became golden. If it were merely accuracy, I would understand. But how in the hell can a swing that is consciously anxious about fully releasing the hands into the hits, hit the ball FARTHER? Granted, I had sweetspot contact + or - 5% on all 7 drives, but I have done that before, but I easily added 15 or more yards. I would kill for some video of this swing, but since I have a golf school scheduled for Aug 14-15 and a tournament in Vt at Killington and Green Mountain national the following weekend, I do not dare ignore medical advice and go whack 20 drivers for video. Anyone ever have a similar experience or some suggestions about what I experienced?

Just a guess but.... What you experienced was your body making you swing correctly instead of using all the crap that has been forced into your head over the years and overcooking things!

•Never argue with an idiot. First, he will drag you down to his level. Then he will beat you with experience!•

stay away from your ortho and go see a chiropractor. tell him what happened and have his adjust your wrist. he will pop it back in place and ice it.

my wrists and elbows are shot from my 3 year span where i hit over 600balls a day with horrible form. every now and again i get a bad combination of steepness and clay soil that locks up my right wrist. the sooner i get to a chiro the faster im back on the course.

That is honestly some of the worst advice Ive ever heard. Sorry to be blunt.

If there is actual damage, "popping" it back into place can cause more damage possibly resulting in never getting full functionality back. I avoided seeing an orthopedic doctor for years for my knees and now they are so far gone, I will need total replacement in the next few years and Im only 38.

Nothing helps you find a lost ball better than a provisional hit straight down the middle.

i dont mind your bluntness, but i can base my opinions on facts, studies, experience and most importantly empirical data - i've experienced and seen more injuries rehabed through non surgical means than with.

orthopedics have their purpose and that is solely for replacement, thats all they are good for. you must realize the human body can repair and heal itself when supplied with the right nutrients and with opened neural pathways. proper diet, supplements and realigning the joints and the nerves that go through them can break up any negative feedback loops that are created with such injuries as these.

traditional medicine, numbs the pain with a drug, or goes in with a scalpel. yet most of the time when something is out of alignment such as a wrist, the joints are out of whack and nerves inside them are being pinched causing the pain. taking all the pain meds is not going to do anything to fix that, rather block the brain from feeling the pain. chiropractic realigns the bones so that the nerve is no longer being impinged on allowing the CNS to send signals straight through and past the impingment point signaling nutrients to come through from the bloodstream.

what are you basing your statement on? please tell me you have some experience in this field - otherwise if its just anecdotal say so.

Im basing it on personal experience. I had tried many different options before I ended up with surgery on my knees. My concern is if it is more than a pinched nerve or a wrist out of alignment, than attempting to yank it back into place may cause more damage creating permanent damage. A scope may be necessary to see what the problem is, and the chiropractors that Ive had experience with dont do much more than x-rays.

I took both pieces of advice. I have been seeing a chiropractor (on the recommendation of an orthopaedic surgeon) and saw both this week. The X-ray indicated no breakage, and the ortho guy ID'ed it convincingly as an ECU tendon inflammation. The chiropractor would have preferred an MRI, but based on symptoms, agreed the ortho guy was 90% likely to be right. Normal treatment 2-3 weeks rest, ice, and Advil. Negotiated treatment 10 days rest, if not better, maximum dose of cortisone with lidocaine patches. We only have six months to play in the frigging tundra and I have golf school and our Vermont trip upcoming.

Frigging doctors have no clue. "If you overdo it, you will be in a cast for six weeks." Hey dumbass, as long as the tendon has two connecting threads until early October, who gives a damn? This is GOLF we are talking about. It is sunny, ninety degrees and I am sitting here playing with ice cubes. You seriously expect me to go three weeks without golf with no guarantee the problem will go away? I imagine these geniuses treat alcoholics by telling them to just have a couple of drinks and stop. These dudes are as dumb as lawyers. I appeared for the third time in eighteen months in the village of Menands, NY for speeding. I bring my shyster so we get it reduced to a parking violation. This time the ADA says the judge wants to see us in chambers..so he says, "this is the third and LAST time we will do this, I want your word on the Bible you will obey the speed limit." I complied to my shyster's surprise (I have a history of difficulty with authority) I agrred readily. On the way out he asked me if I intended to keep my word, I said "of course, in his jurisdiction." :)

I am sure glad your knowledge about biochemistry, biomechanics, and the golf swing exceeds your knowledge of NASCAR. I tried to explain to the dumb cop that gave me the ticket that I was not speeding, I was merely qualifying. The concept eluded him. BTW, how are things going in TX?

Well what ever gave that away? LOL admittedly make no bones about nascar. i do not follow or appreciate the finer points of it as you inevitably do.

with that said, your point about qualifying i am very familiar with - though you may need this bumper sticker on your car
