DiscipleofPenick
What makes you want to take a 9 iron to the back of the greenskeepers head? My two things: 1. Every pin on a knob. Playing 6-8 inches of break on 4 footers all day long isn't fun. I get tight pin placements on a 330 yard par 4 but on a 460 yard par 4 why is this flag on a bump 3 feet off the front edge?? This seems to happen more at the premium courses, but everyone seems to do it for a week or two around the Open. 2. Trees in front of, or overhanging tee boxes. Nothing better than a hole that calls for a draw and having a pine tree 20 yards out just to the right of the tee box. Or a par 3 where they haven't trimmed the trees back and your 8 iron could catch any number of branches. What else you got? dadivots
As an old super I have to agree 1000% on a mounded over tee boxes. Never mind the crooked, uneven, slanted, and sometimes obstructed ones. Aerifying and punching them regular and as needed can fix the mounded over ones easily enough. It is for sure THE peeve. Then add in no water in the ballwasher, especially if it is the occasional one... a guy could loose it.
Shankster
Bunkers not raked after rain. Not my favorite place to be anyways, but that makes it worse. Other than that with my limited golf season the greens could be rolling like a parking lot, and I'd be happy. A 9 iron to someone's head sound a bit extreme to me. If your healthy enough to swing, and enjoy the game you should be smiling. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy
PlaidJacket
smithjr9 I'd suggest you have a friendly discussion with the Superintendent. Perhaps take him out on the course for a few minutes and point out your issues. Perhaps invite him to lunch. Does the guy even play golf? Sounds silly.... but I've known one before that didn't. But boy could he grow grass and mow. I've had issues at my course too. But I've been somewhat* successful taking that approach from time to time. * My course is Private but non-member owned. At times I've wondered what the owners were thinking when they did certain things. The folks that own my course are golfers but not serious golfers. Hackers really. Two years ago they planted a bunch of nice large trees around the course. On one hole particularly they planted a large tree on the greenside - shot path side of a fairway bunker virtually eliminating any chance of advancing the ball to the green. It's now a pitchout to the fairway whereas before you had a difficult but playable shot. So now not only are you in a bunker facing an already difficult shot; you are penalized even further by them planting a tree to block your shot entirely. Pure ignorance. The Superintendent told me the owners like it. Ha! But if the tree dies he would remove it. Hmmm? You make a good point about the greenskeeper, but it's not necessarily one as I travel around to lots of courses. There's an issue developing around courses in my area where they are getting into 2nd or 3rd generation of ownership and these kids aren't golfers and only see the course as a money maker. Raising prices without keeping up conditions and whatnot. They don't know golf so they don't even care what happens. Maybe I should be more discerning in my course selection and also shut up and be happy I'm playing too. Peterpc2828
I play municipal course by me (very nice I might add) but for me it would be letting the rough grow way to long to a point of not being able to find your ball. Slow play, no regard for who is behind you or how backed up the holes behind you are, and finally rangers and course not doing a thing about it. At least the two I've worked with have. So I'm not taking anything out on them. I know they have a tough job often dealing with workers who make minimum wage, most don't play golf or understand it. Sometimes there is a language barrier. so a lot of what you see that gripes you, ticks off the superintendent even more. He is not the one setting up crooked tee boxes or cutting bad holes. Granted it's under his domain and our guy if he sees those things will correct them as soon as possible. But he can't be on all 36 holes all the time, every day. I know I often thank our guy and have bought him numerous beers (after hours...ha) and taken donuts etc down to their shop. dadivots
Its all here; that pro shop that doesnt tell you the greens were just cored and sanded that day when you called was a real bad day for all. Those were the days you stayed in the shop and did paper work. The kids in the shop would tell callers to save the grief, as long as the pro or manager wasnt around. Its so true that the family stepping in over time has been the downfall of many a track, and I have gone to and helped in turning around one or two of those with a fellow grass nut. In the end it always has to be done whether by them or a new owner. A sharp young assistant has been told a time or two by some of us old dogs to step up and take a job like that and be the hero... and see where it leads. As far language barriers? We had a running joke that everyone spoke english on pay day when their paycheck was wrong or short. You guys that came and told us that an illegal cup was out there rather than run to the pro shop, or dropped off a beer or a danish were the best of the best! Seems there was always a handful of new used balls laying around when you did.

jasonthepharmacist
I run my local men's league and a couple of our tournaments, two things really aggravate me: 1. People who don't turn in, or properly add their scorecard and then argue with me when I correct it. 2. People who insist on waiting until the last minute to enter tournaments and then get angry when I tell them the deadline has passed. I particularly enjoy it when it is a team event. I can just make space for 8 more people last minute, no problem. I know these seem petty but when you run an event they are a real pain.
