Toeing everything from driver to lob wedge

Recommended Posts

I know the subject of toe hits has been beaten to death but I thought I would come to the well one more time.  From what limited knowledge I have on the subject, I believe I'm swinging out to in and de-lofting the club by raising the handle.  Another issue could be the clubs I'm using, which I suspect are too long for me (5'6") and have the wrong lie angles.  Custom sticks aren't in the cards right now, so any good tips/drills for swinging in to out and keeping the handle lower?

I'm no expert, but... on good hits, do you get a left to right ball flight? That would indicate the over the top swing you mentioned.

If not, you might simply be raising up as you swing (trying to hit the ball too hard can bring that on).

Might try a 3/4 swing (club head point straight up) and see if that improves things. That could help if you are swinging too hard.

There are better folks to answer that I, but at least those are a couple of things to chase! ;)

What are your typical misses?  Pushes or snap hooks?

Personally. I don't think I would compound any swing flaw mechanics that you may have by trying to change your swing to match clubs that may or may not be a fit.  We don't know how you swing, and we can only make guesses which is really not good advice to follow.

You should be able to take your clubs to a pro somewhere, and he can give you the advice you are seeking.  It wouldn't cost all that much to adjust the length and lie angle if that is what's needed, rather than getting new fitted clubs.  It would be better than to keep doing what you are doing.

Having said that, it sounds to me that your swing is a little steep and over the top, but that is my guess, because I am a little flat and hit it towards the heel.

Very few pushes, the occasional snap hook.  Most common miss is a thin pull.

Properly fit clubs are important.  Changing your swing to accommodate clubs is a no no.  Good news is that a competent fitter can shorten your clubs and adjust lie angle for a reasonable price.  Or he may tell you that the clubs are fine, and it's your swing that needs attention.  I can attest that it is less expensive(and less aggravating) to pay for properly fit clubs than for multiple sessions on the range fixing a swing :)

There are so many things that can cause this and I feel like I've researched them all. I dealt with toe hits for over a year, but I recently had a breakthrough in solving my issue. It turns out my grip pressure was actually too loose so the club was slipping a bit on my backswing which was causing me to regrip at the top and I was compensating for this issue by coming in with a high handle. I worked hard the last couple of weeks on firming up my grip pressure and keeping it consistent throughout the swing. It seems to have resolved my issues because I'm in total control of the club now. It feels so much easier to swing now. My point is that there is no one-fix for this. Your issue could be something completely different. Your best bet is to have a pro look at your swing and see if they can see what's causing the fault.

That sounds like you are coming over the top and probably losing your posture.  I personally believe that video is the best and cheapest way to fix a swing issue.

Video as in paying for a pro to look at my swing and offer suggestions or video as in I should have included one with my post?  I'm a little new here so I'm not sure what's acceptable and what is a faux pas.

You can absolutely post a video here and ask for advice.  Just upload it to youtube and then link it here.

As for the issue it could be the clubs and it could be the swing.  I'd highly recommend at least get length and lie checked first.  Eliminate the clubs as a variable before you go changing your swing.

The pull sounds like an over the top move with a square face and going a little flatter with the lie could help, but I'm not a pro or a fitter so take any advice with a grain of salt.

Seriously though, you owe it to yourself to at least go get length and lie checked out on your current set.

As Meyer said above, you can post here or just review it yourself. If you have an app that lets you go frame by frame, that is the easiest way to analyze. I video myself when I'm swinging well and when I'm not, so I know what is happening with my swing at all times.

  • 2 weeks later...

Have you tried practicing hitting out of the heel? I'm a big fan of Adam Young's Practice Manual where he advocates experimenting with strike location. If you can hit the heel and toe on command then you have a better chance of hitting the middle more often.

Possibly a bit of left-field suggestion but one to consider...

At 5'6", if they are standard, you're clubs are probably too long and you're actually having to raise the handle to flatten out the sole. It's easy for your weight to creep onto your toes in that situation and from that position it's very difficult to keep the club on an outward path. Your brain goes into self preservation mode as it would rather you hit it out on the toe than fall over on your face. Additionally, if you're too far away from the ball, your timing has to be impeccable. Trying choking up a bit, setup a little closer to the ball and keep more weight on your heels at impact.

When I hit on the toe it seems to come from an over the top move with an intention of swinging out to right field.  This seems to raise the handle thru impact causing the toe hit.  When this happens to me and I don't think right field I get it out of the middle of the club face but it almost always a pull.
