Considering a new putter

3 feet is probably farther than you need. If you can hit a dime consistently at I think 20" that is the same as .5* of error which would make a straight 20 foot putt. The distance might be an inch or 2 off since i did the math a while ago.

pretty good video on putting that I ran across recently...

Yes it is a good video. The setup to seeing the correct line is how I started. I stand quite a bit off the line which goes against the traditional instruction approaches but was taught to me by my putting instructor. Seeing the correct line helps avoid subconscious influences to correct what you are seeing

So went to Dicks Sporting Goods yesterday after another terrible round with my putter on Saturday. I played around their putting area with the Spider (although it was still wrapped in the plastic), a few of the Cameron Newport's, the Golo 5 and Futura 6M. The spider was by far my least favorite (could be because of plastic) the Golo I did the best with putting, however theres something I still love about the Newport 2's look. I didnt putt as well with it though. My heart says Newport 2 but head says Golo 5... still unsure

I would think your heart would be happier hearing your golf ball hitting the bottom of the cup ;) go with what will make the puts!

How did you test the putters?

Spent about 45 minutes, taking 3 putts at a time from the same spot (several different spots) with each club (different orders so it was that I was getting a better read by the 4th club). The puts were about 12-15 feet.

What was the purpose of your test? Being able to make the putt? In my opinion making the putt is irrelevant for testing. Does the club start the ball on intended line if you make any length stroke?

Don't disagree but there are lots of putter "fittings". Need to find a good place to get fit or a putting specific instructor

Well would ya rather have a good looking putter or one that allows you to dig the ball out of the hole more often?

My theory was if I can put the ball in the hole or close enough for a tap in, the ball was going where I wanted it?

I would have also looked at consistent miss and distance control. Making a putt in a store really isn't a test.....some store have a tendency to have everything break to the hole

Never really thought of that... I know most of my putts were missing just to the left, maybe 6 inches or less behind the hole. I may have to go try the putter at another store or two and see if its the same.

Again I know Im not the greatest putter in the world but if I could leave them that close or in everytime Id be very happy

Keep trying putters you will get to the point that one stands our.

Trust me in that you are not alone in wanting you putts to end up close to the hole. It can be accomplished with some practice. I work on starting the putt online in my living room doing the dime drill or rolling a ball down a yardstick. Distance control is the ladder drill or putting to the fringe on a putting green. Speed control is establishing a baseline putt on a known green and seeing how far that baseline putt rolls when you get to the course to play

If you are half an hour from an edel putting center I'm confused as to why you wouldn't go get fitted.

I bought my last putter for $60, went for a putter fitting with it that cost me $100 including the work and it stayed in my bag for ten years. That's a pretty good value.

My current putter is an EVNroll that Guerin Rife fit me for over the phone base on the results of that original fitting. The difference is that I get better distance control off of my miss hits with the new putter.

IMO a putter fitting is the quickest way to save strokes. Lessons and practice through the bag would be the best way.

Good luck

I would love to try an Edel fitting.  I actually have a colleague who knows David Edel, but I'm 1,000 miles away and don't get down to Texas much.  The one fitter in Iowa doesn't do it any more.  Think they could rig up an Edel 2-ball?

To those that think Edel (or perhaps any custom putter) is the answer to all things putting I'd suggest you think twice. I have a custom fit Edel putter and it's a decent putter alright. But, it's pretty basic really. I was already a good putter with an Odyssey wht. #9 I'd purchased at Academy for $39. I just bought into the hype of Edel and a custom putter and decided that's what I wanted to do. So I did. Nobody forced me to buy it. It's nothing special in my opinion. Just custom built is all. Big whoop. Do I putt better than I did before I went custom? No. I still putt good. But no better.

Your experience with a putter fitting was radically different from mine and most people's then. My putter fitting took what I currently had and reworked it for me. During that fitting we determined the type of putter that I should use, the length, grip and lift that would work best and then the fitter took my putter and adapted it.

My handicap was cut in half from being consistently around 2.5 to 1.2. I averaged nearly two putts less per round after that fitting.

Really isn't magic. Edel fits the putter to your stroke to help you get a consistent setup and return the putter to the correct impact position. You can go to the edel website and find fitters.

I used an instructor that taught me about putting and we exchanged video and emails to help fit a putter that would work with my stroke choices.

You have two ways to fit putters. Fit a putter to your stroke or fit your stroke to a putter. I believe in the first approach since it is easier to change a putter than it is to rebuild how you putt.

Both approaches can be successful but take practice. Can't give up on an approach just because you have a bad couple of rounds otherwise you stand the chance of not improving.

It really was simple putting fitting is huge. Plaid would be one of the few perhaps the only person whom I know that went for a bonafide fitting without a tangible result.

I being absolutely truthful about my putter fitting. And keeping with the truthfulness..... I never did any actual before or after collection of stat data. I just know is all. If I had noticed any improvement I would have crowed about it big time. It just wasn't there for me. Not at all.

I've been fitted for irons and saw big improvements most notably in my shot dispersion with a little added distance. Driver.... well, one driver fitting maybe two were a bust or not enough improvement to switch. My current driver is basically OTR but I did work with a pro/instructor and got it dialed in. And I saw a good improvement in distance, dispersion, and shot shape.

Sounds good to me :) sometimes we see improvements and sometimes we don't since what we already have works best for us.
