Most important club in the bag

I love Dave Pelz but statistics say otherwise. It is in fact about ball striking. The best players are the best ball strikers.

Sorry Dave

The masters is a perfect example of this. 2 of the worst statistical putters on tour, but they are also the best ball strikers on tour, ball striking keeps you on the game.

After getting my @$$ waxed last Wednesday on league, I'm going with driver. The guy I played was a BIG hitter.... and accurate. He had 3 legitimate 300+ yard drives that were right in the middle of the fairway... 1 on the green. He never had more than a wedge in, except on a par 5. I played bad, but I still wouldn't have beaten him if my game was on. You can't beat distance coupled with accuracy.

Last Tuesday I played with 3 guys who hit 300+ yards off the tee playing from the white. It took them 2-3 more shots to hit the green from less than 100 yards and 3 putts average each hole. One guy 3 putts from 6 feet. I'd love to hit drives like them but I'll passed.

Most important club in the bag is the mp14 1iron, it keeps me humble:)

The results of my round are dictated by the driver...

Most important? Maybe not... but definitely has the biggest impact.

I am beginning to wonder if this depends on the ability of the golfer. I bet there is information out there that shows the most important club by ability and how it determines scores

I think you probably nailed it. I'd love to see if anyone can dig up that info.

Has to be the big dog. Driver sets you up for up to 14 holes of the 18 (maybe less if it's short or you don't hit driver). Yes a putter is important, but I would argue that the amount of technology in a driver trumps the putter in relation to being in love with your driver vs. your putter. My coach always said "driving for show and putting for dough" is b******* because you'll almost never play a good round if you can't get off the teebox.

Exactly my thoughts. **** the putting if you can't even get to the green without penalties.

But assuming your driving and putting are at the same level... then perhaps I would give putting the slight advantage.

There are and it's always ball striking. It's not that putting is unimportant it's just that the difference between the best putters and the worst putters is far less than the difference between the best ball strikers and the worst ball strikers.

So it's a harder question to answer than on the surface. I will grant that.

If anything I would say at the highest maybe the putting because anyone can put the ball in play. But even then, the driver can still get you in a lot of trouble.

Absolutely the driver.  If you're not driving in play consistently, you are always playing catch-up with the other clubs.  The one putts for pars instead of birdies and the unnecessary pressure on wedges etc

Putter by far. I shot 7 over yesterday with 7 duck hooks off the tee. If it wasn't for my putter I would have easily been in the mid 80s

If you were in the fairway would you have been even par?
