Thanks for posting this, the one statistical accomplishment that I would add would be his best decade in the majors where he went actually eleven years with nearly all top 3's and only one MC. It was remarkable.

The other thing to remember was that the season was shorter. Jack's early season schedule was geared towards the Masters. He would actually make over his game to hit draw and then put the fade back in for the US Open. The ball curves so much less today that players don't have to worry about it. They can fit either shot shape into any course most of the time.

For the most part of his career Jack used the 15 or so regular events that he played in to prep for the Majors.

The "most runners up" is, in my opinion, the most amazing. It just has the "WOW" factor for me!

Doing the math: he entered 164 majors, finished Top 5 in 56... That's 34%! So, in 1 out of every THREE majors he entered, he finished in the Top 5! That's crazy.

Read somewhere that he used the same 3-wood for every one of his majors. Don't know why, but that alone blows my mind...

If I remember correctly from the show, he used the same putter for 15 of the 18 majors.

Kieldog, I love the stats. I only want to argue one point, and I think most people forget it. Bobby Jones was technically the first player to have a "career grand slam". I know the majors were different back then, but also consider this:

1. He was an amateur

2. All the majors were won via match play

Just my opinion but I thought I would toss that out there. Does anyone else share my opinion?

Also -- the US Open and the British Open were stroke play back then. The Amateur Championships were match play.

It is easy for me, Jack was the best pro ever and Bobby was the best amateur ever.  Then the nod for best ever goes to Jack because of longevity, Bobby had bad health and hung it up while still great.

Yep. PGA championship was the last to change to stroke play I believe.

Jones may have been the first, the stats above don't discount that. It says Jack is "1 of 5", not the first. It also says he did it three times. One thing not noted here is that Jack was Amateur Champ twice just like Jones. It talks about the importance of achieving that in the show because Jones was Nicklaus's idol.

Yes Jack was a very good amateur too. I've always wondered what the prime version of Jones, Palmer, Nicklaus, Woods would be like from a competitive standpoint. Man what a match that would be.

I love Arnie but he's not in their league on the golf course.

Jack and Tiger stand apart. It's too hard to figure out what to do with Jones so I put him a notch below and then there's a cluster of guys that come next including guys like Hogan, Sarazen, Hagan, Player, Palmer, Tom Watson so it's quite the cluster.
