If you haven't thought of giving up every few years, you don't care enough. Wanting to give up is part of the cycle.

Ha ha ha.. Ain't that the truth! A few summers ago I couldn't hit a driver or iron to save my life. Went through a sizable amount of balls in a month. Finally took a break for a month as I was getting over analytical about my swing. Saw a teaching pro to tweak the basics and I was good to go (good meaning not going through a ton of balls just my normal quarter ton ).

I was having a terrible round the other day, and on 17, which is called "the round wrecker" it's a long par 5 with a creek & a pond and an elevated green.

 

I hooked my drive towards the clubhouse..... it hit a tree, (the only thing that saved the clubhouse) I had to punch next shot back onto the fairway. So I'm laying 2 almost to where my drives go.

 

I did save double bogey. My bogey putt missed by a few inches. I was on the green in 5, so I regrouped! Just wanted to vent!

I've had seasons where my ball striking and overall game was so bad that I quit for the whole year. Now I just fight my way through it and do my best.I honestly believe it is my non athletic makeup that hurts me.You can only take so many lessons and get your clubs tweeked and the rest is up to you.

I sucked 10 strokes less than I did last Thursday carding a 79 today.  37 + 42 = 79  We started on the back today as their was a junior 9 hole match on the front so it took me a while to get it going but I did on my last nine.

I really wish my muscle memory didn't have dementia... Ha ha ha. One day I'm hitting wedges great for me, then out on the course blade or chunk it after hitting a great drive. Nothing more frustrating then shooting a 97 that could of been low to mid 80s if I didn't hack my approach shots to the green...

Last year, I had a health problem.   I went to see my primary care doc and after a basic examination I asked--"How do I stand".   His reply was "That's what we are trying to figure out".   But also instructed me not to play golf until they can diagnose my problem.   Long story short, every test taken, every exam given did not disclose a problem.  Eventually, it was suggested that the incident on the golf course that caused me to literally pass out could have been chronic dehydration.   So they gave me the go ahead to play again, but not to walk the course and to monitor how I feel at all times and take it easy when necessary. 

 

For a while, I wasn't sure if I would ever be allowed to play again and that is scary.   But now, it was somewhat of a blessing because just playing with my buds is what's important to me.   Understand, I still like to score well, but staying on the green side of the grass and enjoying friends now is what the game is about to me.   The thought of losing it, adds a new perspective.

My wife has a Lady who she plays a great deal of golf with.   Her friend is ok as long as the round is a smooth one.   Let the wheels fall off and she's got pout all over her face.   Come on now we can't be at the top of our games all the time!   We all suck now and then....   Recognize it and move on to the next round.

With you on this, lol. Shot a 46 in League. Not really worried about the score as it was my first league outing. What mattered to me was that I spent time with some good buddies - Carolina Golfer 2 and a buddy from another online forum.

I had a great time. The weather was nice, the guys I played with were great.... I just had a lousy evening of golf. I'm not a good player, but I'm not that bad either....lol. Next week will probably bring a different result.... thats golf.

My brother and I spent Easter with some family in Georgia.  Played Harbor club at lake Oconee.  In 18 holes I had more 3 putts than I did all of last year (not really).  It was the first time that I couldn't "figure out" the greens by the end of a round.  Speed was solid after 3 or 4 holes but I saw breaks that weren't there, and there were plenty I didn't see.  I ended up attempting to ram in 5 footers to take out the break but was severely punished on misses due to the greens rolling like they were concrete.  Made me realize that when away from the type of greens in Ohio  I really suck at putting.  It was fun though, and I beat my brother

I mentally reviewed my round. It was a mixed round for me. Driver was up and down (I did get a few lucky breaks, one of which turned a draw/hook looking like it was going OB into a fairway hit - no one saw or heard it hit a tree or wooden marker, but there it was smack in the middle of the fairway!) irons came back to life (my Mizunos must of heard they were on the chopping block, potentially being replaced by AP2s, Cf16s, Pings or Srixons)... Wedges, which have been very problematic the last 5 rounds started working again. Even the putter was decent tonight. Starting to enjoy this game again

I was a decent player in HS and kept it up for a bit after that but in 2002 or so, I got to the point where I was not ok with being "average". If I couldn't go out and stay sharp, I had no interest in playing so I played maybe once every two or three years, socially but that was it. I was just way too competitive to enjoy golf.

Cut to January of this year and maybe it was the weather, maybe it was having a 1 year old and wanting to escape the house but the golf bug bit me like a horsefly on my taint! Something snapped and all of a sudden, walking a course for hours by myself became the most wonderful and relaxing thing in the world. I'm back to obsessive practice and hope to get my handicap under 5 by the summer but if I don't, it's ok. As long as I can avoid my family I'm a happy man!

Shot a 101. There I said it. And it felt like I shot a 101 . The driver had the hooks, I kept on blading 90 yard approach shots, missed easy par or birdie putts, and had terrible sand shots all day. I'm pretty sure my Handicap has broken into the 20s after today's round. Time to regroup and review my round...

4 double bogies on the round. Caused by chunked iron followed by fat pitch , water hazard, fat shot in fairway bunker followed by thinned chip, and OB tee shot.

But acknowledging you suck at some aspect of your game can be viewed as negative but can also be constructive.

 

My post was about sucking at the short game and fairway bunkers and how they lead to blowup holes for me.

Yea I'm only 66 now and I can see things getting tougher in a few years. Life is short so sucking on a golf course rates low in the big picture.

I'm a former college golfer, although small college. Today I can shoot anywhere from 71-87. I always hit it good on the range so I never know what will actually happen once I get in the course. The last 2-3 years I hit shots that are mind-numbingly bad. Simple shots that just make me wonder what I'm doing spending money on this game. But alas, I keep going out and playing and practicing. I suck
