What's your putting grip?

86 members have voted

  1. 1. What grip do you use when putting? (feel free to elaborate below as well)

    • Traditional/dominant hand low
    • Non dominant hand low (Left for righties/right for lefties)
    • Pencil/Paintbrush/Claw
    • Something else
    • I putt opposite of what I swing the club (putt lefty/swing righty or vice-versa)

So it's standard grip with a really really strong right hand. Consequently if you use that grip in a full swing it will produce a draw ball flight.

Yea no doubt if your iron swing had a grip that strong it would have huge tendency to turn the ball right to left. Especially if you have a flat swing plane..

You got to find something that you are totally comfortable with and rollthat rock.... One thing that's helping me is I'm able to lag long putts much better which has cut down my 3 putts. Anyways do what works and get that sucker in the hole as quick as possible!

Find that hole!!

For some time in college I did go left hand low. However I always find myself back to the conventional grip. Something about feel on longer distance putts

I use an odyssey versa blade with a super stroke slim 3.0 I would always just use the standard grips but this putter had the super stroke on it and I can say I am very impressed by the feel and overall grip. Also getting used to the putter not having a line on the top to signify the middle of the club. I'm getting good at eyeballing it though.

First time on the course with my counterbalanced 388g Ketsch TR and it lived up to its billing!

I was all alone so I was able to try a few different grips - traditional, left hand low/crosshand, pencil/claw....

By far my most successful was the pencil/paintbrush style.

The crosshand/left low really stabilized the putter but I couldn't get any touch on the ball and my speed was all over the place.

Greens were wet and slow but I could see the trail of the ball and could tell I was hitting it online.

Just switched over to left hand low last year after a number of years of horrible putting. Also put on a Super Stroke 2.0 grip and the results have been dramatic.

My putting grip has been the same now for a number of years. Left hand high, right hand low, BUT, I extend the index finger of each hand down the shaft. This puts a space between my hands, as well as a kind brace formed by my right hand and index finger. I start a putt with the club head behind the ball by a ball width or so. This cuts the backswing down considerably eliminating deviation in direction picked up in a backswing. The picture depicts my setup. (And a diy putter).

Started the pencil grip for putts 40 feet & below, as it does a fairly good job of eliminating the pull or overly closed face at impact. Traditional grip with anything further as the stroke feels more similar to a short wedge in my mind. Seems considerably better for distance control.

I switched he'd from a traditional grip to a pencil grip last week. I had been struggling for about a month with putting (35-40) putts per round. The change is starting to pay off as I hit 30 putts today. My goal is to be between 30-34 putts every round right now.

I switched to non-dominant hand low for two reasons: it was a quick adjustment and eliminates excess wrist movement. I played left hand low the first day experimented with it on the practice green. Immediately I notice how much more confident I got inside 6 ft. Every straight you just line it up, grip, and hammer it home. Just mentally it is comforting that your hand closest to the hole is leading your stroke.

TSauer and I are very similar (I'm right handed though). I hold my club like normal with my right hand and my left index finger covers my right hand ring finger. I was leaving many putts to the right before I started to do this. As for distance control, that's still a work in progress!

Left hand low/back handed. Since 2000 this has been my go to grip. I'll leave it every once in a while but this is my go to. Love the feeling I get when I pure one into the center.

But back on topic:

Recently switched putters (longer shaft, heavier head and counterbalanced) and then also switched putting grip to claw.

Well, I think it's "claw" (??) .. ie. fingers on both hands extended with fingers of trail hand straighter; just the fingertips of each hand on the grip.

Prior was traditional (I guess?) with both hands loosely on the grip facing each other front-to-back and thumbs extended down the top. With a bit of a reverse overlap.

My putting was never great, and the start of this season it seemed to get a little worse - worse distance control, more three (or .. worse...) putts... So these changes - so far - are seeming to help!
