What's your putting grip?

86 members have voted

  1. 1. What grip do you use when putting? (feel free to elaborate below as well)

    • Traditional/dominant hand low
    • Non dominant hand low (Left for righties/right for lefties)
    • Pencil/Paintbrush/Claw
    • Something else
    • I putt opposite of what I swing the club (putt lefty/swing righty or vice-versa)

I've tried claw so many times, I want it to work but I can't get it down. When I bring the putter back, it gets a little crazy and goes off line. Feels almost as if I'm putting one handed. Any tips?

I was having that same issue and I noticed it had to do with the way my lead arm rotated as I went back. I experimented with the grip on my low (lead) hand and ended up going with an extreme weak grip where my left hand is almost entirely externally rotated (think, elbow pit facing out). That completely solved it for me.

I use a reverse overlap with the left hand being dominant in the stroke. It helps me to keep my wrists quiet and to stroke the putt instead of jab it, two things I've always fought.

I'm getting more and more comfortable with putting right hand low, I've always felt I got he ball started on line this way, but I could never match up the speed. The more I use this grip the better the distance control is becoming.

been putting left hand low for the past three years. the other way putting made me feel like my shoulders were open. left hand low let's me feel more square with the ball and helps me make sure i'm square at impact using a blade style putter. i've tried to go back how i used to grips the putter but it jus doesn't feel right anymore.

Currently putting traditional.  Have had some success with cross-handed, even experimented with a belly putter for a while.  Have tried the claw grip a few times but have had no luck with it.  Have also tried a split grip, right hand low, which I didn't see listed in the poll.

I meant to reply earlier. It's rather hard to describe. So hopefully the picture will do. I've been trying to get away from an overly mechanic stroke . To me it feels straight back and through because my eyes are over the ball.

I was a very good putter for years (consistently averaged 30 or less putts per round) using a traditional grip with the right finger down the side of the putter. A few months ago I got the yips and anything I tried whether it was new putters, grips (tried interlock, moving the index finger off, both index fingers down, changing my stance to be wider), but nothing worked for more of a round. I liked the feel of the claw or pencil grip but couldn't adjust to longer putts and get enough feel. My main issue was keeping the club on line which then turned to distance control as things imploded. I went to the left hand low grip with a double interlock one night while screwing around on my putting cup at home and instantly loved it. Distance control wasn't nearly as hard as I thought and it's become my go to. I love putting again. Standing over putts inside of 10 feet I have total confidence that if I made the right read that my putt will stay on line and go in. 10/10 would recommend.

Well I've played 7 or 8 rounds now having fully committed to left hand low, from traditional and there's been a big improvement in my putting!!

Not sure on exact numbers. But the lag putts are getting closer (even drained a few ≥30' putts) and I'm not hitting it off the toe which is why I started to play with my grip (I was pulling it inside as I'd hit through the ball)

This season I started experimenting with the claw grip. Once I got comfortable with it, I found that I am much better at getting the ball started on its intended line. Distance control has been a bit of a struggle at times.

I just started left hand low this week. It has really help me to follow through on left to right putts that have always been my problem. Feels really good so far up close but still awkward at distance after so many years of a "conventional" putting grip.

I always used to tinker with my grip, then I finally found something that feels natural and has improved my putting a lot. It's almost like a ten finger grip, but my right index finger (as a lefty) runs over the top of the fingers on my left hand. If that makes any sense.

I've used a left hand (non-dominant) low for about 12-15 years now. Has felt the most comfortable and just able to get the ball to roll on the line I want. Feel like it helps to take my wrists out of play, especially on shorter putts.

I overlap for my general swing then take that grip and just kind of spread my fingers so my hands take up more space on the grip. This helps me keep a loose grip since it's almost impossible to grip it tight spread out like that.

My grip is fairly traditional except I have index fingers on both hands extended down the grip. It helps me feel where the putter head is lined up through the stroke. I have tested every grip you can think of and this one just feels the most comfortable and confidence inspiring.

This is my grip as well! I went to a flatso 2.0 and it allows both index fingers to be on flat parts of the grip. Really has helped my putting

Hands are pretty even. I use a 38inch Nike counterbalance putter and hold it a bit high which always for an nice easy rock of the putter. I do feel weird putter one or another hand lower then another. Mid slim sized grip.

I'm not normally one to go out and try something that you see or hear on the Golf Channel, but ... happened to be watching a few minutes of a recent Senior tourney and don't know which player it was but the camera zoomed in on his hands when he putted - and ALL the commentators, including whomever was the visiting pro that day, were absolutely totally raving about it!

So I gave it a try....

And now it's my putting grip!

Don't know what it's called (if anything fancy) but I'll try to describe it:

I'm right-handed, so the right hand goes on first .. and ends up being a bit 'under' the left. Right hand is loose, of course, near the top with index finger extending down the grip, back of palm facing back, rest of fingers on the back of the grip and thumb running down the top.

Position the putter head and then loosely wrap the left hand on .. to mirror the right .. with back of left palm facing front (down the line), index finger pointing down and thumb on top .. with last 3 left fingers gently overlapping the right hand last 3 fingers.

So I guess the left (lead) hand ends.up marginally lower down the grip.

This has really seemed to have helped me stabilize the putter head and keep it moving more in a straight line back and through.
