Shankster
After a few posts and a seemingly large amount of Great Lakes Members let's get this party started! I am in the central UP of Michigan, I am willing to travel as long as it's in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin or Minnesota. Would need at least a months notice to get the time off work. So who's interested? Some ideas for a Michigan sites: 1. Gaylord Mi (tree tops) 2. Grey Walls... 3. The Bear in Traverse City 4. The Nightmare/The Dream I don't know much about anything south of West Branch. Please put up your ideas, thoughts or disagreements below. Thanks!!! Edit: If you ever want to come play Grey Walls, I have a huge yard that you can camp out in to keep things cheap. I'm about 25 minutes away. And a hour or so from Sweet Grass a former LPGA and Champions Tour site. Edit: After much consideration and thought. I will be adding Ohio to the Great Lakes get together. I personally won't be able to get down that way, but if the southern Great Lakes folks want to take charge please do so. There are some great courses there, I played in near Cleveland while I was stuck there for a week due to car trouble. Thanks! - Alan

JudgeSmails
How about Fort Wayne? anyways, I would prob be willing to drive about 2 hours for a get together if something got put together......and would be happy to host here, location wise it wouldn't be too bad. Central to MI, OH, IL and very cost effecting, cheap to play/stay here. newballcoach
Coming from Toronto area, something in Southern area of Michigan is the easiest for me. A place like Gull Lake View Golf Resort(which was suggested to me by an MGS member as a place to go) seems like it would be a good start. 6 courses, although a few are slightly spread out. I don't care if we go there, just that geographical area seems like it would be best for a lot of people. I am in the central UP of Michigan, I am willing to travel as long as it's in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin or Minnesota. I got in a car wreck in Cincinnati and refuse to go back to OH NO... and various other reasons (plus you guys already have something going). Would need at least a months notice to get the time off work. Just curious.. I have been going up to Hessel in the summers since I was a toddler. I love the area, and the people. But I have ran in to "issues" with locals once they find out I am from Ohio. Is it college football? I mean I went to OSU, but I don't watch college sports, and don't own a single piece of apparel. My brother and I were actually threatened and forced to leave the Islander (bar in Hessel) because the waitress told some local boys that we were from OH. I guess I don't get it. If I ran in to someone from the UP on my lake I'd buy them a beer. Shankster
That isn't right. I have many friends from Ohio. But I have met my fair share of jerks too, but I've ran into my fair share of those everywhere. I think it goes with any tourist town, (not saying it's you or anyone you know). But I grew up in Petoskey, huge tourist town, lots of a holes from everywhere. But those people must have had a bad experience with some people to treat you like that. 9 months of the place all to yourselves then an influx of out of towners. A town I live near is really bad for that. Tons of tourism but they don't want it, and don't want to build anything to support it, which I neither agree or disagree but I will say the tourism has taken a toll on the national park near by. I used to camp there as a kid and it was in the middle of nowhere, now it's more of a party spot. I'll change the original post to include Ohio. Didn't mean to step on a nerve, I think he Florida guys/gals have a similar issue with us "snowbirds". PlaidJacket
I'd just pick your place and course(s) and and invite anyone that's interested to come play. There is no pleasing everyone. Everyone has their schedules and a whole host of things/reasons that might not allow everyone that wants to play.. play at your chosen time. Some want a particular course, or a different region, or a different time to fit "their" schedule. It's a given that most everyone wants the event in their backyard. Me too. But...you'll just have to try it and throw it against the wall. Some will stick and some won't. JBones
Are you from West Branch? I used to go there every summer (my dads ex was from there). I played a course up there when I was 12-13 and I don't remember the name, but there was a tee on the top of a hill and you hit would to a fairway about 100' below. Badfish
Shankster, I hear you. I live in a tourist town. A lake in the middle of OH, and all the city folk congregate here in the summer months. It gets hectic at times. I hope you know I didn't mean to be aggressive in my post. I was simply reaching out to a golf brother up north for some insight. I appreciate you including us in the group, and hope to be able to meet up and have some fun. I'll be following the post. Thanks. MGoBlue100
Depending on what you want to do, Grand Rapids should be a great spot. Lots of high quality golf, as well as plenty of lodging options and a great local brew pub scene. Easy drive from OH, IN, IL & even Toronto. (I used to do that one 2-3 times a year.) Courses you could play: Thousand Oaks, Thornapple Pointe, Cedar Chase, & Quail Ridge among others. Gaylord and the lakeshore tend to get pricey, and it's a looong way from below the S border of MI. Depending on when y'all set it up, I may be in the area for work, and would love to join in! "Where'd it go?" "Right in the Lumberyard..." mrsmith123
Guys after reading this I'm of the opinion that we need to just have like three options and vote on it. I think everyone would be in but let's not waste our breath on just throwing things out there for two months. Shankster, you're the farthest north so we have to look at some middle ground. Here is what I propose for options: 1. Bucks Run (Mt. Pleasant, MI) 2. Angels Crossing (Vicksburg, MI) 3. Black Forest (Gaylord) 4. L.E. Kaufman (Grand Rapids) 5. The Orchards (Washington TWP, MI) Okay, so that is more than three lol but these are all really great tracks and pretty centrally located to N,S,E,W in the area we are talking about. All of them have very cheap accommodations in the area too. And we can probably car pool some if needed. I would feel that a time in the fall is best, probably late Sept or early Oct for weather and traffic purposes. Shankster
It's probably going to be tough for me to get down there this summer. Big changes at work and I might have to be at work more. But if you dudes/dudets want to put something together I'll send the Trophy down your way. Seems to be more people in the LP... I'll still follow the thread and give input, as I hope to be able to make it. Keep the fire stoked. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

JudgeSmails
I would throw this one out there as well, right across the street from Firekeeper's Casino in Battle Creek, is a really fun course.....It's not 'luxurious', but is kept in great shape and very affordable. Those wanting to spend the night, have many options, including the casino (although the hotel there is pricey), lots of other cheaper options as well. Right off 94 would be easy to get to, and pretty centrally located......easy from my area, detroit, chicago, Toledo, etc.... mrsmith123
Or maybe we should take a vote on two? How about this: #1 Choice: Buck's Run in Mt. newballcoach
End of summer is likely the best time for me. Once September hits I am unlikely to attend due to teaching and coaching obligations. But if that time doesn't work for everyone, I will cope. I think Buck's Run would be my vote.
