New (Old) Putter Obsession...

Shankster

Recommended Posts

I got the putter in the picture with those old Hogan's. I was toying around with it in the house thanks to Mother Nature and her desire to perspire...

Anyways I have another one just like it on the way thanks to aliens8mycow.

Does anyone know of modern brands besides Wilson that make this style of putter?

I'm on the look out at every garage sale and antique shop from here to the Canadian Border for hidden gems.

8/10 from 10'

10/10 from 5'

6/10 from 15'

Beats my Taylormade all day!

The Ping Tess is similar to an 8802 style putter and is available in the current Sigma G series. I feel like I have seen some recent boutique brands carrying the 8802 style as well. For me, this style of head does not work well for accuracy but I do love the classic look.

Which boutique brands? I saw the Kronos, betti, made by Flanagan, and maybe a few others that I can't remember.

Lajosi is another boutique brand of the classic 8802. I was looking for an 8802 recently and had looked at some of the boutique brands. Then I realized why buy a souped up version of something that was already perfected 50 years ago.

I love classic putters. I gonna cut my Rife 2 bar down for my wife to use and I staying strictly with classic blade putters from now on.

Toulon is releasing one, though I don't know if they can be considered a boutique brand anymore--so let's throw that in the main OEM category.

I think the Bobby Grace 6313 is a perfect basic blade in the boutique category. But his multi-rebound insert options are also pretty cutting edge in the distance control department.

Alternatively, if you're hunting uber boutique in a true bare bones blade, this one is pretty special - http://www.mcssl.com/store/bobbygraceputters/catalog/product/81ba0729345b42e794a032d1e84a367f

He did use the 8802 style for many many years, now he uses the #9 that he has bent all over the place. It works for him I guess.

LaMont Mann can update one identical to it. He's done several pure blades for his customers. Check out Mannkrafted Golf Works via google or on his Facebook page. One of the nicest putter makers you'll ever talk to also.

He's familiar with the design, he collected bullseye sand Julius Boros heads and there was one very similar to it made in the Boros Collection

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.

I think back in the day Corey Pavin used a Cleveland putter similar to an 8802.

Corey used an old Acushnet brass Bullseye. Nostalgia is the only justification to use those old putters. I'm 72 and played them all. Currently use SC Newport mid slant or an Odyssey #7. Got my old Ping Cushin out the other day, we've come a long way Baby.

My first classic putter was this old bullseye I found at a used club shop. I can't putt worth a damn with this thing, but it's a classic design.

This 1950's H&B Mars 70 putter I bought for $5 in 2004. Replaced grip with another red leather. This has been my gamer since I got it. I've tried newer styles, Anser, mallet, center shaft, what have you, and I always come back to this blade.

Me too. I like the high toe on it. Looks much nicer than an 8802's more rounded toe.

I still want to find a nice 8802 though. That's next on my list.

Yeah, I'm always scouring the bay for classics like that. I'd like to find one and start a little restoration project.
