This is a good change. What is a playing partner/marker for, if not to protect the rest of the field? These "TV Officials" need to be removed from the process.

Honestly wish that they would have just said "No more calls/emails will be taken from the public regarding possible rules infractions". I just read a comment on another site asking: " what would happen if a viewer called in a possible infraction on a Monday, after the final round was completed?". I think that is a great question...there is still too much disparity with the new rule.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm interested by the reactions to this news.  Their decisions don't really outlaw video reviews, no matter whether its a viewer calling in, or someone in the network truck bringing it up, or an official taking a look to confirm something he thinks he sees.  It would (quite appropriately) eliminate penalties for things that aren't visible to the naked eye, like the Anna Nordquist grains of sand.  Ir would eliminate penalties if a player uses reasonable judgement in determine where to drop a ball.  However, it would NOT absolve Lexi, moving a ball 3/4 inch on a putting green isn't using reasonable judgement. The USGA/R&A are specifically NOT making any decisions on whether callers or emails would be ignored.  The are specifically NOT eliminating the 2-stroke penalty for signing an incorrect scorecard, when a player isn't aware that they've breached a rule.

This is a good change. What is a playing partner/marker for, if not to protect the rest of the field? These "TV Officials" need to be removed from the process.

The Fellow Competitor SHOULD protect the field, but fan favorite Phil Mickelson has said he's seen players moving the ball like Lexi did, and has apparently chosen NOT to protect the field.  Its a pack of buddies, they don't want to be responsible for enforcing penalties on other players.
