Resumé Help?

Anyone good with resume building? Super good job opening and I suck at writing about myself. Anyone good at them that wouldn't mind reading mine and giving feed back?

- Al

As a hiring manager for the past 20 years, I've seen thousands of them. Many very good, but a lot more that were just Meh!!

I'll be happy to take a look at it. I'll pm my email.

But some hints are.

Go in chronological order, sounds obvious but not to everyone. Ha

Don't go back more than 10 years unless of course it is within your current or most recent job to that one. I don't really care what you were doing 10 years and chances are you're not the same person you were then. For better or worse.

List specific achievements with factual information. Don't just say I increased sales. Tell me by how much and over what time frame.

List any current relevant software expertise, but I don't care that you are an expert at WorPerfect

Build your self up with out being arrogant. Get my attention.

Don't lie!! Don't LIE, Don't EVER LIE!!!

Those are just some quick hints.

One last hint. Did I mention Don't Lie?

I seriously doubt it'll be that bad,,based on the PM you sent me.  But I will give you my honest thoughts, good, bad and ugly  :D

One of my favorite pieces of advice I've heard about creating a good resume, is  "it should be like a miniskirt, long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to keep your attention"

Oh and one more thing I will add, which I don't do enough of especially in this forum, SPELL and GRAMMAR check.  I am certainly no English teacher when it comes to grammar.   But if you use hear and here, their and their it and they wrong, I cringe.   And misspellings just shows that the person didn't care enough to take the time to look something up for an important task.   Or they were sure it was correct, I'm not sure which is worse.

I like to see some personal information, include an "Interets" section. Generally most applicants have similar qualifications and experience, and something about you can help you stand out. Resume's don't get you a job, but they certainly can stop you getting one.

I cull unqualified applicants first, then look for something that tells me a bit about who you are and how you work.

Good luck, and remember, don't lie

I would suggest writing a cover letter explaining why you want that specific job, and maybe if you are from out of state why you might want to move. I have seen a lot of resumes that don't seem to have any past experience in the job they are applying for and no explanation on why they are apparently wanting to make a switch. Addressing why you want the position helps you stand out over other applicants that I can tell sent a generic resume to dozens of different companies and job types.

Oh, and be shur u yooze tha spel chex. Best of luck!

Define your objectives, and understand your potential employer's objectives.

Your objective with a resume is to get an interview; that's where the decisions are made. Make sure you state that clearly.

Do some re-con, like talking to some current employees, to learn as much about the hirer as you can. You may learn of some common ground, or connection points, which you can softly mention in "general interests". (You might also find the guy/gal hates golf! Best to downplay that one lol).

I used to hire sales managers and secretaries. I wanted to see in a resume the ability to condense pertinent information into a few sentences; assertiveness and self confidence, but never smug.

Edit Ps: Follow up within 2 days with a phone call to make sure they got your resume. You are communicating this is important to you.

Another tip, spell "interests" correctly, unlike my earlier post

Keep it to 1 page if at all possible. That's about as much as they're going to spend the time to read so get the high points on the first page.

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.

This is just another thing wrong with the world today. Used to be you put an application in, talked to someone and you got the job or not. Now, its all so damn complicated just to get a job. No wonder the world is in such a mess. It doesn't matter if you're qualified or the best guy/gal for the job..... its how good your resume is..... and did you impress the HR person well enough. What a joke!
