Jiro
Do you and your playing partners let each other have gimmes? If so, how big is your putting circle of trust? On a similar idea thread, one of my favorite Ryder Cup moments is when Anthony Kim didn't give Sergio a gimme much to his annoyance. TSauer
I tend to trust most of my playing partners ability to sink them from a putters length. Sometimes though, if we're playing more competitive than usual, we'll make each other hit every putt. There are times I will go ahead and putt gimmies because, well, you never know what's gonna happen. It's golf. MDGolfHacker
I sucked at putting and it got so bad (maybe a bit of the yips I guess), that the guys I played with didn't automatically give me the putts in the circle of trust zone, even the one footers. Rightfully so though, lol. I putt a bit better now so I'm back in the circle of trust zone MDGolfHacker TSssWhat's In This Lefty's Bag? Shankster
My dads league partner decides his own. And it's anywhere from 20' and in depending on the green. But I generally putt out even if it's an inch away. I'll give them within a putter head width. I mean the objective is to get the little ball in the hole in the least amount of shots isn't it? Kind of gypping yourself if you don't drain that putt aren't ya? Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

mrsmith123
I believe this is all relative. If it is a non-competitive round then I could care less if someone wants to pick their ball up on the green. In a competitive round though for a match-play situation, then it depends on what they've shown me on putts as the round goes on. If they look shaky on the greens I may not give them anything outside of a foot. If I know they are a solid putter, I may be more "giving". silver & black
Depends: is there money involved? If so, no gimmies, unless its a couple inches. League play? Not if its for birdie.... putt it out. Outing? Putt them all out. You won't win, but you'll keep your integrity. I hate outings for anything other than having fun and supporting a good cause... way too much cheating goes on. PlaidJacket
I just finished playing a match with a buddy. We almost always play a Nassau with skins. Yeah... I gave a few today and was given a few as well. I'd guess they were all under 18". We call that the Circle of Love. I don't like giving the so called "strapper" which these days seems to mean the distance between the putter head and the bottom of the grip. That might be anywhere from 23 - 25 inches! You ever missed a 2-footer? Yeah... me too. In the leather used to mean the length of a grip or about 10-11 inches. DaveP043
In my match play league Ive given chips. If I'm guaranteed to win the hole, then a gimme will only help their handicap, and me the next time we play Just a note, if a shot is conceded, the player is supposed to record, for handicap purposes only, the score he most likely should have made. If you conceded a chip, he probably should count three more strokes from there, and at least two. A gimme shouldn't affect a handicap at all, if the players understand the handicap rules. And to answer the OP, we use the length of a standard putter grip as a guideline for gimmes. Not from the putterhead to the grip, from the top of the club to the end of the grip, about one foot. ecks208
If we have money on the line, I want to hear the ball drop in the cup. If we're just out playing then it's usually within a foot. I typically have one 20+ handicap with me, so if they are struggling to get on the green and are putting for more than a double, I'll usually help guide there ball into the hole.
