Homeowners, what item did you not think about buying but ended up being useful?

TSauer

Recommended Posts

My SO and I have purchased our first home, and we will be moving in either next week or the week after. The apartment life has gotten old, and we are more than ready to get out.

So, for those who own homes, what is one item you never knew you needed but ended up being handy?

Lawn mower, garden hose, hedge clippers, wheel barrow, shovel/s and of coarse....... a money tree.

Yeah, I've gotta get my hands on one of those money trees.

Home owners insurance/ flood insurance- unfortunately have had to use both. Im glad I had the coverage.

Oh and most importantly, a safe place to hide all your golf related purchases from your SO.

I've got the safe place under control. The house comes with a detached shed I plan on transforming into a man cave with hitting mat/net for all my golf shenanigans.

Poison ivy killer. Didn't know we had some growing in some bushes where the kids played.

A GOOD lawnmower. Will save you time and expense in the long run. A good grill.. No sense in spending years burning food because you can't control the temp of your grill.

Get the house painted before you move in. A lot less work without having to move the furniture around while painting.

Very solid points!

We plan on buying a riding mower so it's quicker and doesn't cut into my golf schedule ;)

Fortunately, the entire house was remodeled so everything is brand new, which doesn't require any painting. Thank goodness, because I'd be acting like Mr. Miyagi while watching the SO paint.

No one said congratulations yet!!! So congratulations!!! Big move, we bought our first house 2 years ago. And I'm still finding things I "need" like a golf sim, putting green...

Thanks, Shankster!!

Those are definitely necessities. I already have so many golf related items on the "to-buy" list. Can't wait to be able to practice when there's snow on the ground.

A house cleaner

Also I recommend tackling a project together at the new house. We built a stone patio after we bought our first house. Took 3 weeks but something we did together and made the space ours. The little one watching the tablet was 3 months old.

A good cordless drill. Dewalt or Milwaukee. Spend a little more for them. They last. Nothing worse than buying a tool twice.

Very good point!

That's a cozy little setup. As of right now we don't have a back patio, but a large back yard, so we plan on doing something like this. Those dogs are both giving you the cold shoulder haha.

As a new buyer, a home warranty is not a terrible idea. We had one when we scraped together cash bought our home, and it covered a collapsed sewer line six months later to the tune of $4500.

Second fridge for beer is also a good idea along with a practice green next to that fridge. B)

Ah, forgot about the second fridge. That's a good call. Fans in each of the rooms if there isn't one already. Can lower your electricity costs since you don't have to run ac all the time. Get a good sitting tractor. Depending on the size of your lawn one of those zero point tractor... Speed and nice cuts = more family / golf time. Outdoor Speakers for your time in the yard.

One other thing I just picked up, a large inflatable screen and a projector. I cross connected my outdoor speakers so I have an instant outdoor theater with surround sound! Watched big sporting cable/TV events and also for kid centered parties, sleepovers, etc... Not a must have but a fun have ;)

This sounds like the perfect Masters party setup. I'm eventually going to convert it to a smart home hopefully. Locks, thermostat, lighting, the whole nine yards. I'm just trying to decide Google Home or Amazon Echo.

Definitely for me it was a good BBQ. Not a cheap superstore one. Made a huge difference and have been using all year long.

Well, the projector is really only good for dusk to night time stuff :D.  During the day, it gets all washed out from the sunlight.

Congrats on the house. I am on home #3 and a good BBQ and a beer fridge are a must. Depending how handy you are having a home workspace for projects is a good thing as well. I am the son of a contractor and can do just about anything but electrical and my home shop has saved me a lot of money.

Lot's of great things so far in here and I'll 2nd most of them.

Good grill

Tools

2nd Fridge

Bonfire pit

Good mower

Outdoor speakers (or good portable bluetooth speaker)

Get the Cutter backyard bug off spray and hose your yard with it to help with mosquitos

Also build lots of shelving in the garage.  You always run out of storage space and getting those shelves up before it's full makes live easier.  Add in hooks for things like hoses, electrical cords, bikes, ladders etc and try to get as much stuff off the floor and on the walls as possible.
