That said, I just like his fluidity and effortless looking style, timing transitions and ability to keep count on somewhat complex rhythms (This is coming from a guitarist (me) who just happened to pick up drumming from being around them all the time. So my opinion is pretty limited dimensionally). FrogginBullfish
I love Matt Halpern. He's #1 on my Mount Rushmore of drummers. He's got the technical chops, but what draws me to him most is his passion and his groove. I could watch/listen to him play drums all day long. I've been fortunate enough to meet him a few times and he's such a good dude. He's also tossed me a couple drumsticks after shows as well and I have one of his old drumheads from a tour.Matt Garstka is my #2. Also got a stick from him after a show. His technical prowess is second to none. Seeing him play is just jaw-dropping every time.Meshuggah's Tomas Haake is my #3 for much the same reason as Garstka. Watching him play is just an awe-inspiring experience.Anup Sastry rounds out at #4. Much like Halpern, he's got the chops but his groove is what really draws me to his playing. He's not in a band at the moment, does some solo stuff and played on Devin Townsend's last record. He was in Intervals and Skyharbor.Carey is right up there though. He's just extremely talented. Is Josh Freese relevant any more? I know he was kind of branded as a punk genre drummer but he was in a perfect circle and gigged, toured, and recorded with about a million different groups. I was a Vandals fan back in the late 80's early 90's. Oh.. that reminds me.. Tim Alexander was pretty awesome in Primus.. I say that because he drummed in a perfect circle for a minute too. FrogginBullfish
That's just how music, and art in general, is. We all have our own tastes in art and it may change over time and that's totally cool. It's what makes music such a great artform. For me, Periphery are a band who's music just truly resonates with me, and the guys in the band are just so inspiring to me. It's not a coincidence my favourite drummer (Halpern) and favourite guitarist (Mark Holcomb) are both in the band and they're a big reason I've wanted to pick up the guitar or grab my sticks and hit the practice pad -- until I can get an actual drumkit that is :P.Devin Townsend's another guy who's music just strikes a chord with me. There's not many bands or musicians for whom I'd spend a few grand traveling across the world to see in concert, but I did that with Devin in 2017 for the 20th anniversary of the release of his first solo album Ocean Machine when he played a show in an Ancient Roman Theater in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. I guess it's just a difference of taste (and maybe age).
