Love them! I have one of their “albums”. Paul Hardcastle is one of my favorites, along with Boney James, Joe Sample, etc
When I lived in Charlotte, I went to the Jazz Festival there every year.

I'm still in Tool mode. I just finished listening to Fear Inoculum  for the the third time in it's entirety. This band is just mind blowing.

... Let me first state, I was a DJ for the entire 70's and just into the horrid 80's which hastened my departure from radio, so my musical tastes reflect the amazing time for the origin, growth and experimentation of RocknRoll. (1 year in Country music was torture LOL) I interviewed many bands and and MC'ed concerts in the 70's and it was such a great time to be around music. So many great bands that played any and everything they could find, thanks in large part to The Beatles. So I have never been a Metal fan but feel TOOL is their own musical category combining the best music of every generation into their own unique, mesmerizing sound. "Mind blowing" amen.

I am very uncomfortable with downloading and streaming having replaced hard media like LPs and CDs.

Fortunately, it doesn't matter.

Sinatra is dead.  Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie are dead.  Miles Davis and John Coltrane are dead.  Luciano Pavarotti is dead.  Aretha, Otis, and Wilson are all dead.

Dr. John and BB King are dead.

I have every record I'd ever want anyway.

And I hardly play any of them anymore.  I should, though.

There are plenty of musicians and bands today that are advancing music in the ways those you mention did in their time. All you have to do is be willing to seek them out and be open-minded enough to give them a chance.

I finally took the time to watch this documentary of Rockpile from about 1979.  I'm always fascinated about how actual records are put together, even simple rock and roll stuff like this.  One of the best bits comes late, around the 41:00 mark,  when Alvin Lee lays down his guitar track for a nearly complete song.  Dave Edmunds is a pretty good guitar player himself, watch the look of awe on his face as he watches.

I'm considered an essential worker in a work space that usually has 2500+ daily and now we're down to 300 so music is a must.  Right now it's the Dave Matthews Band channel on my Sirius XM app.  Dave rocks but so does the Sirius app, anything and everything is available.

Dev's an interesting character. If you've ever listened to Steve Vai's album, Sex & Religion, Devin sang on that. He went off on his own after that and started doing some solo stuff and had a band called Strapping Young Lad before starting The Devin Townsend Band and then The Devin Townsend Project which he dissolved a couple years ago. Some things I'd recommend checking out are Ocean Machine, Empath, Terria, Epicloud, Transcendence and if you're into the more conceptual, yet decidedly goofy side of things, Ziltoid the Omniscient. He's also in a country type thing called Casualties of Cool. He's had a long career with a rather prodigious output that covers a fairly broad range of the musical spectrum so there's bound to be something there for everyone.
