How Long Did It Take You To Break 100, 90, 80, etc?

Just wondering where everyone is at. I know it can be hard to really compare, seeing that some play more per month than others. But, about how long did you it take you to reach those milestones? How close have you come to breaking the next one?

Once I broke 100,breaking 90 happened fairly quickly (within a few months). It took me a few years to break 80 and I've only done that a few times. The lowest I've gone is a 76. Then marriage and kids happened and with that, practice time. Now I can shoot anywhere from 105 to high 80s. Since the kids are older, my goal is to shoot in the low 80s, high 70s consistently since I have more practice time.

As of now, I've only broken 100. I've been golfing for about 2 years maybe 3-5 times a month so I'm not able to dedicate a huge amount of time unfortunately, but with a +20 handicap with as much playing as I do I would say is a pretty nice accomplishment. I'm sure I can break 90 by the end of the summer with a bit more playing. How about you, Tsauer?

I broke 100 first season back, but I was stuck on 90 for a season. I'm mid 80's now, with an occasional blowup to get me a 90.

One of my goals this year is to break 83.

Lowest round on regular course 86. I'm getting there

I started young so breaking 100 by my freshman year of high school, and then breaking 90 soon thereafter. 80 took me till I was about 20-22.

About a year to break 100. Still struggle to break 90 early in the season but that comes with no practice and not playing a couple of times a week.

My best was an 82, so I know it's in there somewhere.

No clue. My dad never allowed me or my brother to keep score when we were learning the game. He wanted us to focus on learning the game, making shots, etc. We would usually play two or three balls per shot. Basically, until I was 15 every round was an extended practice session. The first time I kept score, I shot somewhere in the low 80's.

It took me about a year to break 100, but several years to break 90.   Truth be known, currently, any round in the 80s is a good day,   While I have had 3 rounds in the high 70s during my lifetime, for me to ever break 70, because it ain't gonna happen in this lifetime, I would need to be like the guy that got matched with a Priest.   He went to the course as a single and found that the guy with whom he played was a Priest.  He said to the Priest, you talk to God often, so could you ask him if there are golf courses in heaven because I have tried to live a good life.   They agreed to play again the following weekend and he asked about the courses in heaven.  The Priest told him that there are 100 perfectly manicured championship courses in heaven and OBTW, a tee time is reserved for you next Tuesday.

That's actually not a bad thing to do. Yes, score is nice to know but it can affect your game sometimes if that's the only thing you're focusing on. What are you shooting now?

Breaking 100 came fairly quick for me, not sure how long, but I also play very often. I would say 90s took around 8 months to a year. Right now I'm on the verge of being able to break 80, hopefully by the end of the year it will happen. Some days I'll shoot mid-high 80s, others I'll be back up to high 90s.. It can be vicious.

I'm taking golf seriously again for the first time in about 15 years. Somethings are coming back, some are not! After the last update, I believe I'm a 6.2 handicap. My best ever was the summer after I graduated from HS when I briefly dipped in the mythical land of the "+".

I would love to visit that mythical land someday. Doubt it will ever happen, but one can dream.

Hah! I have a 15 month old child so as long as I can shoot 80 or better with some consistency, I'm happy!

I will say this if you are serious about lowering your score, you have to have a plan, you have to practice and you have to practice with purpose. Get the Dave Pelz short game bible, write down some of his practice routines and spend an hour or two a day, really practicing chipping and putting the exact way he recommends. Even just an hour a day or "real practice",not just hitting balls will make you score much better, incredibly fast. Do it for a month and you'll notice a serious drop in your handicap.

The other thing good players do that everyone should, is spend at least an hour before your round getting ready to play. Like this. Notice, Speith uses an alignment stick on literally every shot he takes, he videos, he measures. Everything is focused and purposeful.

Good luck!

I was late 20's when I started broke 100 the first summer... breaking 90 about 4-5 years playing sporadically. Shot low 80's occasionally for the last 4 years with my lowest round being an 80 2 years ago.. but shoot mid 80's fairly regularly now.. with an occasional 90 something and low 80's thrown in for good measure..

Love the game more than ever would play every day if I could..

I broke 100 consistently after a few months I started. As soon as I made 7i my best friend. I worked at a golf resort in college and one pro gave me a solid offer by hooking me up with the shinny new callaway big bertha at his cost only one condition, he started me with 5wd off the tee, once I can hit 10 fairway he'd sell me 4wd, then 3wd, 2wd( yep the spoon) then driver(took over a year). This is something I thank him forever, I'm so used to seeing drives in the fairway and I know I can hit any woods off the tee and still know it'll be ok.

About 6 months after I broke 100 I broke 90 for the first time and 6 months later I'm an 80s shooter and stay there for a long time til I get the hero shots out of my system and focus on high percentage shots and short game.

2-3 years later I had a breakthrough and start shooting in the single spends the next few years dropping it to 4 where I plateaued. Then I quit the game in 2002-2003.

Fast forward to xmas 2013, I started hitting the range and join the private club and in 3-4 months drop to 4 handicap again. Now I'm at 2 on the home course.

If I can go back and do it again I'd be able to do it in less than half the time. You may think is crazy but it's not just the skills improved but the mentality. Mid 80s shooters has 80% of the skills as mid 70s shooters but 70s shooters are more mentally ready and comfortable with shooting in their range.

I shoot under par all the time but can't seems to get over the next milestone mentality to be a scratch, my brother has every shots I have in the bag and more distance off every club but he's a solid 10, always wondering when is the next hole he's gonna blow up after a few consecutive birdies or pars. That's my 2 cents.

Thanks for the pointers, man! I actually have that book, I just haven't sit down to read any of it yet. I usually dedicate Mondays as my practice day since the course is empty and I can do just about anything. But you're right, I need a plan.

I was playing everyday at that point. No individual instruction yet but had attended a junior camp that Summer. We had a tourney (my first) at the end of the week; shot 91 and took home 2nd place. I was playing with a 7 club set of Tour Models that pops built for me. Made ~30 footer in near total darkness a few months later for a 79 (my prior best was 85) that left him speechless on the ride home. Dad shot 77 that day. He bought me a used set of Hogan Edges the next weekend and I started practicing until my hands bled. The 59 club feels a long way off.

My golf career started playing in a scramble because my buddies needed a 4th. Since then my tournament scores in our club open we're 101 in 2010, 95 in 2011, 88 in 2012 and 78 in 2013. Lowest I've gone is 74. Since 2013 I have kinda leveled a little averaging about 40 per 9 when I play. I shot par once on 9 two years ago but getting consistently in the 70s has been tougher than I expected.

I broke 90 pretty quick. About a year into playing golf which was 7th grade so broke 90 by 8th. I don't remember how long after but I think my freshman year I broke 80 for the first time. Doubled 18 (making about a 10 footer btw) to shoot 79. I still haven't broke 70 unfortunately. I've hit 71 a couple times. But no 70 or under

I didn't start playing par 72 courses until I had already been playing the game for a few years. I learned on Par 3's and executive length tracks. My first round on a Par 72 was 94. Broke into the 80's that summer. Broke 70 a few years later, with a career best 67. That was 18 years ago.  I play about 10-15 rounds a year anymore, and I am always a threat to shoot 75 or better. (or 95 or higher)
