How Long Did It Take You To Break 100, 90, 80, etc?

TSauer

Recommended Posts

I broke 100 and 90 in high school, so a shade under 30 years ago in 1996.

I broke 80 the first time in 2007.

I have broken 70 once, and it happened last season.

I broke 100 about this time last year. Barely cracked 90 once this year. So about 10 months to get to this point. Still consistent in low 90s though

Just wondering where everyone is at. I know it can be hard to really compare, seeing that some play more per month than others. But, about how long did you it take you to reach those milestones? How close have you come to breaking the next one?

I started playing golf "for real" at age 36 after finishing my career in baseball (I had hit some balls and tagged along with my dad a few times as a teenager, but never owned golf clubs, didn't keep score and didn't play all of the holes, even when he was only playing 9 holes).  It took me three years to break 90 (I broke 100 on a tough 18-hole course within my first season of playing golf, playing by all of the Rules of Golf as far as I know).  By my 3rd or 4th full year of playing golf, I was playing forged blades (Hogan Apex "Redlines") and I broke 80 for the first time in my 4th year of playing. I think that my baseball and earlier youth hockey background probably helped with this, and I had a mid single digit USGA Handicap index from my early 40s until after I was 60 years old.

I broke 70 (68 on a par-70 regulation course of about 5,950-6,000 yards) for the first time in 1991, at age 42, less than 6 years after I started playing golf, and have broken 70 only one time since that, but there were (4) temporary greens and a couple of temporary tee boxes and it was in the off-season -- I actually drove 3 of those 4 par-4 holes with temporary greens and hit a par-5 in two shots where the tee box was moved up to about 440-445 yards (driver + 4 hybrid)*.  Last year, at age 74, I shot 71 for 18 holes (there's a post or two about this in the "shot your age" discussion here).  However, with a current handicap index of 14.5 (13.4 low index in mid-season of 2023), I don't expect to be close to shooting my age very often, if at all -- at least, NOT YET!

* I was 70 years old, and actually shot 67 that day, but it didn't count as "shooting my age" due to the temporary tees and greens.

Took me 2 years to break 100 after starting in 2020. In 2023 I broke 90 once. A few weeks ago I did it again. I’m not looking for the broke 90 badge until I’ve done that at least 2 times in a row just so I know it isn’t a fluke.

Congrats!!

I feel the same way. Until I'm consistent in staying below that, in my mind it doesn't count as a standard benchmark. (It's cool they gave it to me though!)

It’s a grind for sure. But I realized I shoot better when I just enter my score in any app. Which right now is the GHIN app. I don’t look for score to par, I just look for what I need to input for that hole, and off I go.

I was able to shoot low 80s in high school but didn’t break 80 until I was in college in the early 90s. Still knocking on the door but haven’t broke 70 yet.

My first complete round ever was a 126 (playing from front tees), was able to get it down under 100 fairly quick.  Moved back to the “regular” tees (mainly what my dad was playing) and was in the 90s for a while.

Didn’t really keep track of the other milestones.  Still working on the broke 70, but have a long ways to go to get there.

I started playing golf as a senior in high school.  My friend wanted me to join the golf team so we could get out of school to go practice.  I bought another friend's Wilson Sam Snead starter set (with bag) for $10 and I was hooked.  Not that I'm athletically gifted, but I took to golf pretty quick and broke 100 that summer.

Golf took a hiatus until after I graduated and started working.  I worked with a bunch of guys who were golfers, so I picked up the game again.  I don't remember breaking 90, but I believe it was shortly after I started playing again back in the early 1980s.  Then it became a challenge to break 80.  I can't tell you how many times I flirted with that goal and how many 80 and 81's I shot only to look back and be critical of the one or two strokes I left on the course.

It was November 11, 1994.  We had a usually warm late fall/early winter and a few public golf courses were open.  A friend and I decided to play.  That day, I shot a 78, breaking 80 for the very first time.  I know it was that date as I saved the Titleist DT90 golf ball and wrote the score and date on it.  The very next weekend it was warm enough to play again.  We chose a different course and sure enough, I broke 80 again with a 79.

Once you realize breaking what you thought was an unattainable barrier could be broken, it was easier to do it again.

The best I've ever shot was 76 (a few times as I've saved all the balls that I've attributed to accomplishing something special on a golf course).  So, it's unlikely that I'll ever break 70.

I have "played golf" since about 2004 but never took it seriously and just played with whatever clubs I could borrow or use... Whatever I hit I didn't keep score or care as it was just something fun to do with my dad and uncles. I had a general idea of the game or so I thought haha.

I started playing more serious in spring of 2023 and broke 100 within 4-5 months. Breaking 90 has not happened other then a few rounds of low 40's on 9. Seems it takes me a bit to get warmed up as my back 9 is ALWAYS better by 5 strokes or so...

I recently learned that I'm better at self taught trail and error vs getting a lesson and changing everything at once. I can slowly adjust my game and work on what I see/feel vs what I'm told to feel that is basically speaking German to me. All in all I believe I can break 90 this year or start shooting it consistently

Great question but it does make a difference in your age, here are my memories.

To break 100 .... took from 10 years of age until I was 12 (shot 180 my first time on a 6700 yard course, I have the score card still, and my wife and I joined back there about 6 years ago)

To break 90 ....  from 12 years old to 13 years old

To break 80 ....  from 13 years old to 14 years old

To break 70 ....  multiple times at 14

To break 60 ....  I'm now 56 and never got to that point ... lowest has been a 65.

Golf is always about chasing that next step ... mine is to keep walking without falling over and not going back up the scoring ladder too quickly!  🙂
