MDGolfHacker
I go to the demo days to see if I like the look and feel. Then I buy them to fit the distance gaps I have at the top end. Bounce is determined on the course conditions I will most likely play. I am still playing the original Titleist spin mill wedges, but I am looking to replace those this year. gaussman1
I do loft for yardage and bounce angle for turf conditions. I go 50, 56 and 60 and play a course with deep bunkers, very tight bent grass and some thick rough around the greens. So I make sure my 56 has at least 12 degrees of bounce to handle the thick stuff and my 60 is only 4 degrees bounce to help me with tight lies. A lot of players have gone to the 64 to escape the bunkers but I don't want to take the 75 yard shot out of play so make do with the 60. Golfspy_CG2
We're lucky here as we have a regular circle of 20 or so friends who play together regularly. The driving range is always a mini demo day, with everyone feeling free to just grab from anybody's bag and try anything. Nobody is worried about someone putting an idiot mark on their driver or putting bad mojo on their putter. So for me I tried a friends 50* SM6 last year and was hitting crisp chips and pitches off just about any lie. It was the first time I had ever hit a Vokey wedge. I was hooked on the feel. I've always liked a 4 degree wedge gap. So the next day I immediately ordered a 50, 54 and 58. Rtracymog
The wedge has to sit right. I'm a low bounce guy on my wedges so if I see too much of that leading edge off the ground, I get worried. Then I make sure that I can hit all of the shots that I want to. I always liked the V-sole on the SCOR wedges, but I couldn't flight the shorter shots, so it was out. Make sure it fits your eye and your swing more so than trying to match a wedge to different course conditions. BrookseyNZ
I used Vokey SM5 wedges they were awesome, went for a set of RTX 2.0 simply because I could order them dead cheap, they were awesome. Ordered RTX 3 raw on release again because they were dead cheap. They are good but struggled with the v.sole in 60* in firm and dry conditions. Now it's wet (winter) it's awesome. Ordered a milled grind 60* LB to relieve the issue I had with the v.sole and it's was awesome but struggled when the ground became very wet, so put the Rtx 3 back in the bag.. My point being, almost any brand wedge Will suit anyone, just get the correct grind and lie angle (most important) then get used to it. May take a little bit to figure the sole out but 95% of the time it will work very well no matter what it is.. Of all the testing I have done callaway seems to spin the most but for me Cleveland were very close and by far the cheapest... I'm a club fitter and have most wedges available for testing and a GC2 for data. The trick is getting used to the sole . DiscipleofPenick
I feel there are two ways to set up a wedge set. Either 52-56-60 or 54-58, although I'm seeing lower lofts on 9s and PWs now so a 50 may be required depending on the set. Personally I have 54-58. After that was decided I looked at bounce. Munis and publics don't get enough water so I wanted low bounce to be able to trap the ball on hard fairways during the summer. I found that Vokey had the lowest bounce with 4 degrees on the 58, so that's what I bought. I just replaced it and 4 is still the lowest, but if some other OEM offered less I'd switch. Canucklehead
Both Cleveland and Vokey make excellent wedges. Haven't tried other manufacturers so can't tell you anything else. revkev
I saw a Titleist study video that said after a years use your wedges should be replaced is there any truth to that from what you have experienced Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy Absolutely! If you are an OEM it's imperative that wedges be replaced annually! I've shot in the 60's with wedges in my bag that were 10 plus years old. I've shot 90 with wedges that were brand new. If you think through the logic of Titleist's claim it can't be true. Some people will play 100 round this year and practice another 50. Some will play 50 rounds and hardly practice at all. Others play once a month. Clearly not all three will change wedges at the same time. I'm sure your pro or teacher would be a better judge of when to replace your wedges than an OEM. I currently game SCORs. I'm sad that they are no longer made and don't even want to think about replacing them. I do have a Cleveland RTX which I've practiced with a few times. It quickly sends me bag to my SCORs. Prior to them I preferred Ping wedges. I generally had a sand wedge with a good deal of bounce and a lob wedge with very little bounce. Like putter wedges seem to be personal. Try a bunch and see what you are most comfortable with. Reading the first sentence made me think of an angel and a devil on my shoulder saying "Hit the 60*" no "Hit the 55*". Something that every one of us struggles with. I currently use a TaylorMade 60* wedge with 9* bounce. I selected that bounce based on the type of sand we have here in our bunkers and the type of grass, Bermuda, on our fairways. Will it work on other courses I play? Not all the time but 95% of my play is at my home course so it makes sense to have your home club pro fit you for the course you play the most. With the grass finally coming in on the fairways to full height spend a half hour lesson with your pro and let him see the types of divot you take, etc, and get the right bounce so your soul will tell you "This is the one to hit". PMookie
I have chosen based on demo-days and fitting the last three sets I've had. I try all that are available to hit, generally choose based on feel/looks, then set-up a fitting. The Edels I just bought were based on fitting alone. I had not tried them before going through a fitting. I got the putter first- loved it. Irons next, and love them, so figured I'd like the properly fitted wedges too.
