How do you select your wedges?

I have a question: How do you go about deciding what type of soul to use? I play Vokey SM4's in 50*, 54* and 58*. I don't know which soul grind they have. The 54 has the most bounce at 10*.... I think.

I went to a Dave Pelz short game school. He said bounce is your friend. Now that does depend on how hard the ground/turf is

Both Cleveland and Vokey make excellent wedges. Haven't tried other manufacturers so can't tell you anything else.

 

I used to think I had to have 4* gap per club but with my AP2 it's a 50, then I have a 56 SM6 and 60 SM5 in my bag and I don't notice a difference or feel stuck at certain yardages because I just choke up a bit or move it in my stance. I think they're both M grinds. I also have RTX 2.0 52 and 60 2 dot, as well as 56 1 dot.

I read about them on Vokeys site it said something along the lines of soul grind depends kn the steepness/shallowness of the swing and the turf conditions yiu commonly play in. I have the L grind on my 58.

I saw a Titleist study video that said after a years use your wedges should be replaced is there any truth to that from what you have experienced

Absolutely! If you are an OEM it's imperative that wedges be replaced annually!

 

I've shot in the 60's with wedges in my bag that were 10 plus years old. I've shot 90 with wedges that were brand new.

 

If you think through the logic of Titleist's claim it can't be true. Some people will play 100 round this year and practice another 50. Some will play 50 rounds and hardly practice at all. Others play once a month. Clearly not all three will change wedges at the same time.

 

I'm sure your pro or teacher would be a better judge of when to replace your wedges than an OEM.

 

I currently game SCORs. I'm sad that they are no longer made and don't even want to think about replacing them. I do have a Cleveland RTX which I've practiced with a few times. It quickly sends me bag to my SCORs. Prior to them I preferred Ping wedges. I generally had a sand wedge with a good deal of bounce and a lob wedge with very little bounce.

 

Like putter wedges seem to be personal. Try a bunch and see what you are most comfortable with.

Or get Hogan/SCORs and have both options on all your wedges.

 

Of course I agree with your comment. Unless you play a course that almost always requires a certain type of bounce it's best to cover both bases with your two higher lifted wedges IMO.

Pitching and gap wedge - usually use the ones that come within the set, but might rethink that with my gap wedge for my next set

Sand wedge and lob wedge - usually will go with other brands (looking into getting some Cleveland RTX 3)

I find a look that I like and am comfortable with, then I check how it feels. If a wedge passes those tests then I will check the loft and bounce options. That's how I ended up with my Titleist Vokey SM5's

Reading the first sentence made me think of an angel and a devil on my shoulder saying "Hit the 60*" no "Hit the 55*". Something that every one of us struggles with.

I currently use a TaylorMade 60* wedge with 9* bounce. I selected that bounce based on the type of sand we have here in our bunkers and the type of grass, Bermuda, on our fairways. Will it work on other courses I play? Not all the time but 95% of my play is at my home course so it makes sense to have your home club pro fit you for the course you play the most. With the grass finally coming in on the fairways to full height spend a half hour lesson with your pro and let him see the types of divot you take, etc, and get the right bounce so your soul will tell you "This is the one to hit".

I have chosen based on demo-days and fitting the last three sets I've had. I try all that are available to hit, generally choose based on feel/looks, then set-up a fitting. The Edels I just bought were based on fitting alone. I had not tried them before going through a fitting. I got the putter first- loved it. Irons next, and love them, so figured I'd like the properly fitted wedges too. Fitting is the key to all of it, no matter the brand.

I'll try it out either in a hitting bay or outside and get a feel how it feels on chips, full shots and when I open up the face. If that's good, then I'll buy one at around 56* and play it for a few rounds. If all goes well, then I'll buy other lofts I need. If it's not a fit, I'll sell it and keep looking.

 

It's been a good way of making sure the wedges are a fit.

I'll say this, when buying wedges, avoid picking a club based only on hitting off mats! Turf/sand interaction is more important to a wedge than any other club and the bounce that works on a mat is likely to be much different than actual playing conditions.

Yeah I bought some Ping I200s this year 5-UW and the lofts are roughly 4 degrees apart. I purchased some used Ping Glide wedges in 54 and 58 but it looks like the distance gap UW and 54 is roughly the same.

There is a 4* gap between your i200 UW and your 54* Glide.  If your yardage gaps are not correct between the two, it may be the shaft.

Yeah you could be right great point there AWT 2.0 in the irons then CFS wedge flex in the wedges great point didn't even think of that

Just looked at looks like the CFS wedge flex is right because they are Glide wedges if I went Glide 2.0 then it would be AWT but has same ratings hmmm not sure wish there was a demo day man when I lived in Hawaii there was a demo day every week

pretty much how I got my sm5's.  I worked out my grinds/bounce with my instructor, and bought his recommendations (actually unsure what they are, lol) I had first gotten a 50, 54, and 58.  And when I was in Palm Springs this winter I tried a 62 and bought it instantly.  I took the hybrid out of the bag and never looked back.  Now the 62 is the most used one, and I use the 58 out of sand.  With 4 wedges you are never stuck on which club to use, as literally all the tools are there.
