Coffee Bar - French Press, Pour Over or Perk?

I’ve got 3 French presses now, a couple pour overs and an aero press. The aero press is the favorite currently as it cuts the oils and removes any grit so it’s just smooth coffee. I’m wanting a vacuum brewer next.

I've been using a chemex and when I had the espresso roast by BRCC I was thinking about getting an aeropress to try and get the most out of the coffee.

Use the Joe Rogan podcast code and get a free mug if you do. Been drinking their stuff a while, I select my own roast every delivery because if you order at the wrong time you’ll get the same delivery every 2 weeks. I order from them bimonthly and buy a couple other bags from local places as I drink a LOT of coffee.

Nice. Thanks. I will.

If you're a fan of a good cold brew, the Aeropress also does a pretty good job with that. Very quick and simple too.

I just put 2 scoops of coffee in there pour hot water, stir and then let it sit for 4 minutes. Probably not the best way but its better than a regular coffee pot or Dunkin Donuts 🤣 *French press that is*

We ran out of Kcups this past year on our weekend golf trip and they only had french press there, luckily we brought coffee grounds, Have not looked back since. The French press is so rich and creamy.

I would venture to guess that Cold brew is probably more popular here in AZ and other warmer states? Something about drinking something only slightly warmer than the weather during the summer.. not too attractive.. to me anyway 😛

IMO, home brewed cold brew is much better than anything in the stores or coffee shops. Now if I could only get my mitts on a nitro brew contraption and learn that skillset, I'd be set!

Cold brew is fantastic. For those who haven't tried it: it's nothing like regular coffee that's gotten cold. You can take the same beans and make a normal cup of coffee and a cold brew and they end up with significantly different flavor profiles. The cold brew tends to be naturally milder and sweeter, almost a kind of coffee-flavored tea.

I'm with you on the nitro brew; I haven't yet found a reasonable or economical way to replicate that at home.

Key to the hot coffee is small dabble of can in the raw sugar first, then pour the coffee over it so it melts it

That's usually about how it works around here.. except for this year. It's mid-October and still 100* out 😢

Which reminds me.. I have a new batch in the fridge right now in the French Press. It's time for some cold brew!

You guys got me intrigued I'm doing a cold brew overnight since I'm hearing it's good from a few if y'all
I'll be looking for your reaction post in the morning

The only thing you have to be careful about with the cold brew, is that it's really easy to drink a lot quickly.

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

Congrats! One thing to experiment with to get a good extraction is grind size and steep time. You really want a coarse grind and some people find 12-24 hours steep time not robust enough for their liking, especially if you cut it with cream. I prefer a 48 hour steep, which doesn't lose the coffee flavor with the addition heavy cream.

If not cream, you might actually want to water down the cold brew a bit. Depending on how you make it, it'll sometimes come out more of a concentrate. Otherwise you'll really be revving your engines.😂

Yeah there's definitely a seasonal use for the Cold Brew. Once the temp starts to really drop, I'll switch over to the hot stuff.

I think there are a few methods to making Cold Brew so it just depends on what works for you. I make mine in the French Press OR Aeropress. I think the extraction method can accelerate the process a little as it uses pressure to pull the flavor out rather than time. That said, I still prefer a good over night chill when using the French Press.

I'll start with a standard 200* pour over a fine grind filling about 2" of the bottom of the press. Then I'll use an electric wire milk frother for about 1 minute to help get the beans to bloom. I'll then just fill up the rest with cold water and add some ice cubes at the very end before I put the top on and put in the fridge. With the French press, I've invented a hack of putting a paper filter between the 2 wire filters. This helps when pressing a fine grind and keeping all of the silt out.

As for the cream situation, I can take it or leave it. When using, I prefer unsweetened coconut milk as I do love me some coconut flavor! I do use a very conservative splash of sugar free syrup though. Something like salted caramel. I do mean VERY conservative though as I like the flavor of rich dark coffee without sweetener taking over the taste.

I would love to hear what people are using for their cold brew, how you make it and the flavors from the beans. I'll start. I've tried a number of beans and prefer a medium/dark roast with flavors of chocolate, toffee & nuts. Peets Major Dickason's Blend gives me all those flavors.

I use 1 cup of beans at the coarsest setting on my Burr grinder. Put it in my French Press and slowly add water. I let it sit in the fridge for 48 hours and strain it through a coffee filter into a carafe. Some batches I drink straight and some I'll add a teaspoon of Melipone vanilla which adds a really nice flavor to the coffee.
