Do you keep score when the course is aerating their greens? I tend to think not and just play it like a practice round.

I'm with you on this one. There's no way of knowing what the green is going to do on aeration days. I remember going to a nice 18 hole course a few weeks ago, and not knowing they aerated the greens the previous day. Putting was not fun at all.

Same here. Actually last week when I played Sweet Grass, the front 9 was dry. By the time I made the turn they started watering the greens!!! Slowed right down to nothing. Had a decent round going, started leaving putts short on the back!

I tend to play it more like a practice round. At that point I am more concerned about how I am striking it

Greens punched, super wet, cold, cart path only it immediately becomes a practice round. I've only posted 4 rounds so far due to poor conditions.

I take those days and just play a modified game of points for myself. I'll track if I hit the fairway and whether it was the side I wanted. And I'll track my approach into the green. But I won't putt at all

Same here, usually play 2-3 balls off tee if it's dead wood out there and usually play 9, when it comes to the putting I usually don't even bother depending on how bad the greens may be. For me it's a great tinkering day.

Is what it is for me. Just gotta adjust your expectations and have fun with it. Easier said then done but it beats letting it get to you and ruining what could be a good time.

I'm in North Texas, and this is "punch season".

Tip: Call the course and ask before going, if punched greens are your pet peeve. No, a course will not and should not offer that information unsolicited.

20 days ago I played in one of my more recent "regular" groups. In this group is a PGA Teaching Instructor, a PGA PGM Apprentice, and a 65yr old-single digit handicap-life long player. The course looked immaculate from the tee, the fairway, and everywhere else- until we reached the green (practice green hadn't been punched yet, or, more likely had been punched 10-14 days earlier).

Mother Nature determines when aeration *should* be done, and a good superintendent cares about the longevity of grass conditions..... This is long winded for good reason, I promise.....

We all concurred on the first green we would play as we always do, but the greens were in a state of enigma, or paradox. Dave Pelz 'Perfy' couldn't have produced similar results on putts inside 10ft, and we were there to play, not to develop an algorithm for putting on a sandy pot-holed road with black ice (poor attempt at being analogous with driving a car and rolling a golf ball).

We had a blast, the course (Split Rail, Aledo, Tx) is an architectural masterpiece. Wide landing areas appeared narrow from the tee, water hazards that effected a hole running parallel to the one we were playing looked like they effected that hole but in actuality they only served as mental distractions.

Unfortunately, by the time we reached the seventh hole, we had waited on the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth tee box. On #7 there was a foursome waiting to tee off, a twosome waiting on them, and our group waiting on them (we were ALL waiting on a three man group who were uneducated about playing forward, and pace of play). It took 2hrs, 48mjn to play the first eight holes.

Hopefully the OP and anyone else who read this can extrapolate something regarding scoring on freshly punched greens.

That day, it was a Tuesday....the coming Friday, there was a U.S. Open qualifier at Split Rail.

Play it as it lies, but remember 'score' is simply a word, the intention is to distinguish performance amongst other competitors.

My last bit of unsolicited advice: if a round of golf was defined as 180 holes played in a 30 day period, how would my perception possibly change, or, what factors would I focus on that I might not focus on otherwise?

My senior group rolls with the tide if the greens are under maintenance. In fact pending the condition, it could warrant automatic two putts for every one. :D   We still play our blitz and put money in the pot however and we don't let course maintenance schedules slow down our fun.   We may not play real golf however we have a hell of a good time playing fun golf.

We still play normal, still keep score and still enter our scores.

The local rule is just that if your ball is in an aeration hole you move it to one side or the other and then putt.  It's an "official" local rule so it works for us.

Our greens are not punched.  They use a slicer, so it puts little cuts in the green.  After it's mowed, the ball rolls just fine.

I've heard that the machine costs $40K.  The management company owns one and it's shared with another course run by the same company.

We have 12 courses to pick from. The aeration schedule for each course is posted well ahead of time so we can adjust where we we play. We normally allow 2 weeks B4 we go back to a course that's been punched.

It's a PIA for me scheduling but worth it.

I could be mistaken but I think your description is what I've heard called 'verticut'.

On our Bermuda the SI verticuts before punching, and at the first part of June our greens are in their peak condition.

Aeration coming on Monday here in Dallas.

I go two putt max on any putts inside 30' when greens are punched. Outside of that, three putt max.
