Peterpc2828
Just a stupid observation, it seems like some testing opportunities are more popular than others and yes I'm aware the MGS may not advertise all the opportunities on social media, but so far in the last couple of weeks we know Ping irons were a huge hit, cobra single length not nearly as many as ping, shafts not so much and already in just half a day the Callaway driver is surging tremendously. DiscipleofPenick
Maybe it's the brands? Callaway is super popular and Ping has a long time following. Cobra isn't one of the old country club brands. Personally, I only sign up for things I'm interested in. I skipped the Steelheads and am not signing up for the Epic. Not a Callaway guy and would be biased against the product. Not good for objective testing. Popular Post GolfSpy Barbajo
We try to social media the hell out of every one of these opportunities (is 'social media' a verb?) - but some things resonate more than others. The Matrix shafts opportunity went pretty well for shafts - it moved the needle more than any other shaft testing we've done in the past couple of years. It didn't get the same love or attention on social media because the day that went live was the day TaylorMade's sales was announced, so it just got lost in the shuffle. We have a couple coming up in the next two weeks that are very interesting, but they probably won't create the same kind of buzz as PING or Callaway, but that's just the nature of the beast. We try to collect products across a pretty wide spectrum that we think will be of interest to our membership - sometimes we hit it, sometimes we miss it! Popular Post MDGolfHacker
Regardless of my level of interest in a product (some products will naturally be more interesting to me than others) , I make sure, if chosen I give 110% in the review. I just see this as a way to give back to MGS for what they have given back to me in this short time I've been here. deejaid
It's tough because of course a tester wants to be impartial, but you also have to have some interest in the product. I am an iron guy. I love hitting irons. I have played many different brands and styles from Super Game Improvement to blades. I thought of putting my name in the hat for the Ping i200 irons or the Callaway Steelheads, but I am so happy with my irons right now I don't want to mess with what I have, which would probably have allowed me to be a bit more impartial during testing. The only thing in my bag I have thought of changing lately is my driver, so I put my name in to test the Epic. I'd like to see how it will perform against my deep faced Cleveland Classic Custom XL. With drivers though, everyone wants to see the numbers; spin rate, smash factor, carry distance, launch angle, etc. I don't have a launch monitor and I couldn't compete with the great MGS 2017 Most Wanted Driver test, so I'm contemplating what my testing method would be and how I can give the great members of MGS a different take on the Epic if selected. I love that MGS gives us these great opportunities but it is hard work and very difficult to keep up with MGS' already excellent testing. Shankster
Same as jlukes. That one length tech sounds promising for the game. But I might be too stuck in my old ways. I was however very interested in the PING's and by some frigging miracle I was selected, which is awesome, and I still can't believe it!! Like MD said you'll get 110+% from me because I was extremely interested and fortunate to get selected. I won't apply for something that doesn't interest me, just because I wouldn't want to take the opportunity from someone that is truly interested. chershey
The shafts really interested me because I'm a tinkerer when it comes to my existing equipment and love to try out new shafts. I think you have to be the right kind of person to be interested in that arena and understand what you are testing. I already have the EPIC and love my current irons so the shaft was more on my radar than anything. I only like to try and apply for products that I think could improve my current game like my amazing Sentio putter I tested around the start of the year and is still in the bag. Golfspy_CG2
Yep, some will put in for every testing, just to get product. And if they do the required testing snd report back in a timely unbiased manor wiith their experiemce, then good for them. Like a few others have said, I only put in for a product I'm genuinely interested in trying or wondering if it does what it says it will do. The ongoing bridgestone e6 vs pro v is such a case. I'm a devoted ProV player, but I found an e6 late last year and played it for 5 holes and was surprised by its overall performance. So when Bridgestone told us they wanted to see it head to head with a ProV, I was like.,,,sure lets see them side by side. So thanks to MGS and the OEM for having the faith in the forum members to put the time and work in. Also thanks to all testers, past, present and future for the hard work, and make no mistake, it is time consuming hard work, for your efforts in bringing us such detailed test results. Popular Post GolfSpy Barbajo
It's kind of interesting when you go through the applications when it's time to select testers. You see a lot of familiar names - people who only post to apply to test. And those are the ones who have profile pix. Just so everyone knows - no profile pic = zero chance of being picked. Also, it's interesting to read some of the comments in the blog, especially seeing so many people applying in the blog comments. What's more interesting is the more explicit we get with application instructions, the more we get people applying in the blog comments. The boss says there are people who get forums and people who don't, and you can't turn one into the other. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy L.I. Popular Post PlaidJacket
I was asked several years ago if I would be interested in testing a club. (and I took MGS up on it) The selection process wasn't then like it is now. Today it's an eyeball game I think. And NO, I'm not putting anything down. It's just an opinion is all. I like seeing the equipment and reading the reviews. I don't apply for testing for a couple of reasons. First: I don't think I can produce the types of reviews we've all come to expect and enjoy. Also, I don't t think I want to spend the time either. Just being honest. However, and for the most part I think Testers do a great job. Better than I did that's for sure. So I salute all those that do the tests-reviews. It's a commitment. Second: I don't see anything I'm interested in enough to test. I have plenty of equipment. And if I do want something I just go buy it. No strings attached. Advice: If you want to be a Tester-Reviewer and get some nice equipment apply as instructed by MGS and become active in the Forum. Before you accept your offer think about it. And then think about it again. It's a fairly time consuming endeavor. Honestly ask yourself: Will I do a first class job? Am I good at taking decent photos? Photos are a big deal. Can I even write well enough to make sense of it all to the readers? djahubes
I personally only put in for things that I feel I can honestly use and provide real feedback. Quite frankly, when I was selected for the Sentio test it came with a high sense of responsibility to really test and write a quality piece. I think a lot of guys look at these as a contest more than anything else. I would venture that if the equipment was not sent out for testers to keep when finished there would be a lot less people stepping up. Trying to find the balance between those looking for free stuff and those who want to review product seems like a difficult challenge but the MGS staff does a great job at it. chershey
What those, who only apply to test, don't realize is what a great place this is just to talk about golf with amazing people. I've been a member of other forums where as soon as you post something the negative comments comments start rolling in and you have to sort through to find the meaningful ones. You also don't get a lot of repeat topics like some of the other sites, ie "Anybody hit the new EPIC?", "The new EPIC is EPIC!", "Is the EPIC the best driver this year?" It goes on and on with repeat topics that never end and people telling them this has already been discussed a 100 times. This is why MGS rocks, we don't have any of those issues. Peaksy68
There have been a few things for testing that I have been interested in, but the timing was wrong for me to do the review justice. Having done one review, it is not a simple process. It takes time, and a commitment to do it right. I think I learnt a fair bit about how I should go about it if chosen for another review. It's great to see how much effort goes into the reviews, although sometimes people do go a bit over the top. Perhaps a "summary" post of the most important aspects could be included in the link to each stage post for each reviewer. One question I have, what happens when a reviewer doesn't submit their review? I noticed this with one of my fellow MLA Putter reviewers from last year. It's the only time I've noticed a missing review, but I assume it happens occasionally. Currently playing Snake Eyes 600C forged irons with FST Pro shafts. I get to play about 30-40x per year and carry a 7.4 index. My friends say new clubs would help my game.
