Set Pitching Wedge or Specialist Wedge?

Recommended Posts

Forgive me if this post is in the wrong place or is a repeat.

But I am in the tinkering mode right now (probably always there) and am pondering the scoring side of my bag. I am thinking about and trying out new putters, looking hard at the Ping Anser Sigma G Black Nickel version. But I am also looking at my pitching wedge.

I was wondering, what the advantages and disadvantages of playing a pitching wedge that matches your iron set vs. playing a pitching wedge that matches your gap, sand, lob wedges?

What do you play? A stock, set-matching pitching wedge or a specialized pitching wedge that matches your other wedges?

Looking forward to responses!

I have all my clubs, 5i-60* wedge, gaped in 4* increments. I would go with whatever works for you but I personally prefer continuity through my wedges to the feel isn't drastically different from one club to another. Clubs 5i-52* are all Hogans and my 56* & 60* are Vokeys. It's not uncommon to have your irons in a set and then a matching set of wedges, usually 52*-56*-60* or similar. Matching wedges allow you to change your lofts without changing feel.

My irons 5-pw are all cobra and my wedges 50-54-58 are Cleveland rtx So I have continuity there. Wondering if it would be worth it or worth looking into switching my cobra pw(45degrees) to a cleveland 45-46 degree wedge? I know several pros do it for more consistent feel and looks.

It sounds like you're good either way. Are you having issues with your Cobra PW? I would try it out and go with the wedge that works best for you!

Not really having big issues, I struggle with a very high ball flight with my cobra pw. I would like to see that be a bit lower. Also I would like a bit more spin with my pw. Again, not major issues just nitpicking.

What are you trying to get out of the specialty wedge? Looking for a club to craft shots with?

Yep lower ball flight, better shot shaping ability. Hopefully more spin.

I've done both. No right or wrong answer, IMO. I played a long time with a Callaway set where everything to the lob was exactly the same. Loved those sticks, played some great golf with them. Now, I have a penalty bag (box?) of wedges in the garage. I, maybe like you, think they're like putters: sometimes you just need a different look.

Right now I'm in the middle of a Ping Glide 2.0 test. I love them, but would probably never have spent the cash for them new at retail. Just too steep.

I go to the retail stores and buy wedges a lot off the "pre owned" rack. That way, I get to try, but not pay full boat. If I really like something, maybe I go back and buy a new one.

Not sure I helped, or even answered your question, LOLZ. Good Luck; play well!!

Ive always preferred my iron set PW to a vokey or Cleveland type wedge. But it's just personal preference.

This is a great convo and I'm having the same questions.

Needed to upgrade the wedges so I got rid of the (52,56,60) bombtech and picked up a 54* and 58* Titleist SM6.

I have Ping G30's and the pitching wedge is 45*. I obviously need club between the 45* G30 and 54* SM6.

Is there a preference in getting the G30 U wedge (50*) or the 50* SM6?????

I hit the G30 U wedge and the SM6 50*. I hit them fairly similar, but I ended up liking the SM6 better mainly just because the way it looked. The G30 U wedge looked too chunky to me. I'm also thinking about getting a new iron set. So for me I'm gunna go with the 50* SM6. I don't think there is a right answer though. Gotta hit them both and see what's most comfortable to you.

I play a stock 49* PW. That matches my Vr_S Forged set. The biggest reason is I hit that club so well! I cannot take it out of my bag because of the versatility and consistency it provides me. I don't know if that is right or not but it certainly works best for me.

I've done both. This time I bought A and sand. For me, I like them to duplicate my irons in everything but lofts. I am using a Callaway 58' Sure Out" as an L. If it stays in the bag, I'll regrip and reshaft it to feel like the others. Anything you have confidence in, go with it. You can't go wrong with a wedge fitting at Club Champion. It'll save lots of time and money to get fit.

I'm not a fan of ping wedges for the same reason. Vokey and Cleveland have nice compact heads

I tried both last year. I had a 46 RTX 3 and My set pitching wedge. I found I liked the squarer sole of the set pitching wedge for around the green bump and runs. As well I just seemed to hit longer swings better with it.

There is no right way to do it. Rory uses a specialty wedge and others use the iron set pitching wedge.

I always match the PW with my other wedges. Currently testing the Ping Glide 2.0's, but the Vokeys are my steadies. Either way, 48* pw, 54* sw, and 60* lw. I think the vokey pw has a ton more bite and control than the pw in my iron set...

I prefer my pitching wedge and gap wedge to be the same as my irons. I just look as them as 10 and 11 irons, I'm usually going to use them for full swings.

My sand wedge I like to be blade style and I use that for everything 80 yards an in.

To me, turf interaction is the most important aspect of my wedge setup. Do I have a sand wedge with ample bounce to play not just out of sand but also thick rough. Then, is my Gap or Pitching wedge lower bounce for tighter lies, which is usually on the fairway just short of the green.

I don't carry a lob wedge any longer because the heel grind on my sand wedge allows me to open the face up easily for flop shots.

I like wedges a lot. Wish I had 2k and a private jet to go to a JP fitting. Even though I didn't like them at first, I'm open to them now. Can't wait to see how Zinger likes his!

I think that you will ultimately get better performance from high quality specific wedges. That said (no offense to anyone) if you're a 22 hndcp, do you really need brand new Vokey's?

That could be a shaft issue, not a "club" (head) issue. Think a good fitter could adjust your ball flight.

... After struggling with the same issue, I went in a completely different direction. I was alternating sets of Fly Z+ and 588TT's that both have strong 44* pw's. So I tried a 48* Nike Forged Wedge kinda matching my Nike Engage 60* and Nike Black Forged 54* or a Z+ Gw. The Z+ Gw produces too high a trajectory while the Nike Forged has a non tear drop shape that doesn't suit my eye. I tried a set of Nike Forged Combo irons and just loved the short irons, especially the tear drop shaped 48* Pw.

... So I have kept that Combo wedge in my bag. Now I have two Pw's, one the 44* 588TT or Z+ and the other my Forged Combo 48* pw that matches nothing. Doesn't match but the ball doesn't seem to care. Kind of an odd set up but it works well for me.
