Set Pitching Wedge or Specialist Wedge?

Recommended Posts

I play a set matching wedge but that's more of a personal preference but all of my gear from irons down are Hogans so technically I guess they all match.

I have not had good luck playing set Gap or Sand wedges, like someone said it could be your shaft. I have always liked going with 50 54 58 wedge sets.

I fell in love with my 54* and 58* SCOR wedges and they felt so much different than the Ping i20 PW and U wedge that I dropped the Pings and bought 50* and 46* SCORs.  I have to use a lot of clubs around the green because many long holes are just not reachable anymore.  The i20's were just not very good chipping clubs IMO.  I liked having clubs that felt the same whether I am hitting a chip shot or 80 yard pitch.  When SCOR transitioned into the Ben Hogan brand, I also bought the 42* SCOR to replace my i20 9-iron.  I love that club but it presented an issue because I hit the 42* almost as far as my i20 8-iron.  I probably wouldn't have had issues with the PW or A wedge if I had a forged set of irons vs the Pings.

I'm pretty OCD. So.. iron set must match. And all wedges must match. Same color, shape and brand preferably: that way I can expect near the same performance. I really don't do much trickery with my PW. But it would be fun to have another sword in the arsenal. The more I think of it it would probably benefit my game to have a matched wedge set starting with a 46-47, and finding the proper gapping.

I used those .5's earlier as a funky guess. But i did have my new wedges bent weak 1° to fix my distance gap I had. But now I don't have my favorite shot with my 60° around the green, so one of my best shots is left out of my bag. Guess I'll have to pull the hybrid and replace with a 60°ish wedge.

My thought is to ask yourself how you primarily use this particular club. If you typically find yourself using it for full swings then there is something nice about having it match the rest of your set that also gets primarily used on full shots. If you find yourself using it for a wide range of shots like your other wedges then that may be the answer.

But like others have said it will come down to personal preference.

I've always used the pw that has come with the irons and then 3 wedges. I think that it's a personal preference, what ever fits your "eye" best! I'm currently hitting Ping I25 irons and Ping Glide wedges.

The pitching wedge and gap wedge are full shot clubs for me, so I always go with what's in the set. I can still bump and run if I need to with them, but I hit my set clubs pretty well.

I have always had the set PW and then 4* from there to 56* or 58*. No real reason other than advice from fitters.
