Index finger down the shaft

Recommended Posts

I've seen a boatload of folks run their index finger down the shaft with their putters.  Not so much with other clubs.  I've seen two people over the years use this technique with their drivers and they were successful with it. Actually they were better than average with fairways hit.  I've been experimenting lately with this finger riding down the shaft stuff with my driver and the results are eye opening. I've noticed some consistency off the tee, that is worth giving this a longer look. Anyone else use the ole index finger down the shaft trick?  Hey,,, it's not always about being technically correct huh? As Arnie would say, "swing your swing"......

I used to putt like that. Never thought about taking it to any other club. Maybe you're on to something!

I can't see someone who is a power player using this however for slower swing speeds, it definitely could help someone keep the face square.

Very interesting. I'll do it on short putts. Never thought of trying it with another club though.

Suppose it would force a lighter grip pressure on the one hand. Maybe it's a grip you could go to as you get tired and your swing speed slows down.

Let me know how it works out for you. And I'll do the same.

Interesting OG. Like you said, I've done it on putting but never on the driver. Might give it a try on the range tomorrow. After the way I drove on Saturday, it certainly can't hurt.

I do the same on my putter. Maybe this could fix my 'unfixable' drive.

Left or right hand with the driver?

Right hand ....   The finger does not have to be rigid and it can be curled slightly under the shaft.

Exactly!  It forces you to not put a death grip on your downswing.

Hey you never know partner.  If it helps you to swing within yourself you might find more drives in the short grass

Being right-handed, my right hand grips clubs with the last two fingers; middle finder is along for the ride (unless it's a bad shot, then it's been known to point straight up); index finger is slightly down the shaft and under like a trigger finger.

I putt with my left index finger down the shaft, and the fingers of my right hand wrap around the club and index finger, locking it to the grip.

I putt exactly like that but have never done it for any other club. I might give it a whirl this weekend...certainly can't do any worse than I am now.

I have a buddy who's a good player that doesn't have it straight down but rather has his index finger away from the rest of his grip and slightly curled. I like the comment about only a few fingers really owning the grip though, rest is just comfortability and efficiency.

I just picked up a club to swing with my finger down the shaft. It restricts hinging of my wrists.

Try slightly curling the finger like you are pulling the trigger on a gun 🏌️

That might prevent those that cast the club by preventing the wrist hinge, but it also restricts the lag through the swing too which hells generate the power. Just a thought.

No doubt one of the best things this helps me with is flipping.   I have a tendency to flip my right hand over which causes bad pulls or duck hooks. When I run my finger down the shaft it reminds me not to flip.

I have my right index usually slightly curled but, away from the other fingers.  Between this and keeping my right hand pressure extremely light, I hit the ball much better.

As much as it pains me.... I think I'm starting to come to your side this year.

I used to have a 105 swing speed with the driver. I don't know what it is now..... or why, but I have noticed AT LEAST a 10 yard loss of distance so far, this year.

  • 5 years later...

I have just started golf again after 15 years and cannot change to a standard grip no matter how much I try it,  I have to use my right hand index finger down the shaft as it’s the only way it feels comfortable and has done since I played a lot when I was a younger, never had a lesson it just felt comfortable, also played cricket like it to against all coaches advice 🤣🤣
