Shankster
Nice write up on the blog about these Epic irons. What is the general consensus here? $250 an iron for these spaceships? Personally I think they are hideous looking. No I won't be changing my mind this time like I did with the JP wedges. What performance could you possibly gain over the Steelhead...? A yard or 2? Thoughts? - Alan
GolfSpy_APH
My own opinion is it's hard to justify the price. Not when there are so many other great sets out there for far less. However I'm likely not their target market. I'm sure they are great Irons, but they remind me a lot of the TM M1/M2 irons. Seems a lot more manufacturers are getting at least one set of premium clubs out there. All in all I have to agree with you, I'd be surprised if the performance was that much greater then any of their current offerings, but I guess we will have to wait and see what the review shows when it comes along. chershey
Yeah, the price is outrageous but it is nice to see companies still innovating in new ways. For me more distance with my irons isn't a selling point, but if they do a better job of retaining distance on off center hits then it might be interesting. I've heard from someone that they did a quality job on the feel and sound of these irons as well. It will be interesting to see how they do if the reviews are as positive as those of the EPIC driver were. I just can't spend that much on a set of irons plus I love the forged feel of my AP2s. TSauer
There is always a market for premium irons like these, I'm not one of them, but they're out there. I agree with you on the looks, these are not appealing at all, IMO. Curious to see how they perform though. MDGolfHacker
If people are willing to pay, then manufacturers will build it. There is a market for it with those that have a higher level of disposable income that may not know pxg but do know the name Callaway. I prefer a cleaner look to my irons, which is why I like the Mizuno and Titleist lines so much. MDGolfHacker What's In This Lefty's Bag? Canucklehead
Great idea but wonder how many OTR sets they will be selling. That's a lot of scratch to drop for a set of clubs not to be fit to your specs. Sparksjr
not the target market either but that's ok. people will buy them and some of them will see improvement in their game. At least PXG has some comp now. Would've been kind of cool to see them have some super-funky shaft that is only available with the irons. Outside of the price they're not all that different on the outside. Too bad, I think PXG has them there. ole gray
I like Callaway irons however if I were in the buying mode, the Steelhead XRs would be the ones I would consider. I'm still trying to decide if I like the looks of their high priced brothers. They're almost pretty however ugly enough to throw me off a bit. I know there are people out there who would gladly chunk out a couple of grand for something new, different, and shiny however I'm not one of em. Shankster
Call me a traditionalist or whatever. But nothing looks better than a set of chrome blade(like) clubs with minimal branding, that Srixon Driver.. you know the one that won most wanted with its plain crown, and a blade putter. Gizmos and gadgets could be cool. But they over do it sometimes. A blade iron is a time tested piece of consistency that will give you back what you put in. Bravo for trying though.
