Rev - I just read this entire thread. I'm so glad to hear that Penny is doing better, and congratulations on Cambridge. I hope everyone in your family is getting the support they need; chronic illness takes its toll on everyone in the family.

I've had some questions lately so thought I'd give you an update. For those who don't know our 16 year old daughter, Penny, has cerebral palsy. Unrelated to that she was diagnosed with an auto immune disorder last year.

 

She has these IVIG treatments every three weeks. Today, she drove to the check in place, went to the window to get her hospital band, followed the CNA to the IV center, went through her extensive medicine cal history with her nurse and gave proper instructions for her IV all on her own.

 

The first time we were here last year she couldn't tell them her name.

 

She's not totally in remission but it's getting closer. She took an AP English test yesterday.

 

Thanks for all the prayers and concern.

She goes to about ten games a season. She's been to 2 so far. We are going to Miami in July so that we can see her beloved Brewers. It's an early birthday present

She's in the Cambridge Program so even though she did part time this year it was AP Marine Biology, AP English, Journalism and AP statistics.

 

She knocked down 6 college credits as a sophomore and could bag 9 more here. :)

That's excellent.  I just recommended to a parent and student the other day that the daughter should get involved with dual enrollment and get an Associates Degree the same time she graduates from high school.  We had honors classes back in the day, but certainly didn't get the types of opportunities kids do today.  Of course, I typed my papers on a manual typewriter, too.

I always try to remember that I'm not good enough to get mad!

WOW. My daughter is a junior in 2 AP classes right now and I know what her workload is like. Congrats to your daughter! Very impressive.

I do remind parents of abled kids that there are distractions Penny doesn't have to deal with that their child does. She's not playing sports or texting friends because she can't. Plus she's OCD so she will work the snot out of anything and everything assigned her.

 

She is in journalism club and writes for the school publications so she does have an extracurricular activity.

My daughter has OCD also, so I completely get where you're coming from on the "work the snot out of anything" angle. She writes for her school newspaper as well.

 

Her therapist thinks that's why she took immediately to marching band - everything is regimented, and the same every time, and there's high expectations. It's something she's comfortable with and can internalize.
