72nd Hole & You Are Tied For 1st ....

At the U.S. Open, if you had anyone else's swing or game, who would you choose for:

  • Driving
  • Approach or Iron play
  • Putting

I'll go first .....

  • Greg Norman - best driver of the golf ball in terms of distance & accuracy IMO
  • Ben Hogan - best swing & ball striker of all time ... only player I know of that was known to have hit every fairway & every green in regulation during a round in competition
  • Ben Crenshaw - best putter with the best mechanics & stroke around.  His last win at the Masters, he didn't have 1 three putt over the entire tournament ... that's 72 holes on those lightening fast greens!

These can be past or present players.

GO!

Good topic.  I expect there to be a wide variety of answers, depending on the age of the poster.

Driving: Dustin Johnson-Right now I don't think there is any better of more confident in the game.  Just remember what he did in this exact scenario last year at Oakmont (alghough he didn't know if he had a 1 shot lead or 3 shot lead)  THANK YOU USGA!!

Irons: Davis Love...One of the best that I can recall in my era of watching golf (Hogan is almost too easy of choice...ha)

Putting: Tiger Circa 2005!!

Well I know that I'm beating Golfinnut because Greg Norman was the master of loosing on the 18th hole in a playoff with a major on the line - poor drives, shanked irons (one literally in the Masters), missed putts - I think I'd keep him out of the line up thank you. :)

I will go Jack, Jack and Tiger - game over - if I have to take three different guys I'll take anyone who puts it on the map off the tee, Jack and Tiger or anyone who keeps it on the map Tiger and Jack or Tiger, Tiger, Jack or Jack, Tiger, Jack or Tiger, Jack, Tiger.  You get the point.

I've seen all the guys mentioned here play albeit Hogan way past his prime - No one touches those two guys in this scenario - there's a reason why Jack and Tiger won more majors than anyone else.  Any combination of those two guys wins because no one could touch their games tee to green - no one - no way - no how.

Have fun with the other combos though -

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Actually I want to change my above^

Driver (Jamie Sadlowski)

Approach - if we don't hit green off the tee (Michelle Wie)

- even though leadbetter messed her up.She can

At least hit the green with a wedge after 400 yard bomb from

Jamie S

Putt (Sandra Gal)

When holding the trophy.I will have Michelle and Sandra each holding onto one of my calves. As they are kneeling on the green. They are by far the most beautiful women on LPGA.Than I receive trophy and look at camera and say "How you like me now Biatches"

Keep it in the short stuff

I'm assuming players in prime form here so I pick

Dustin Johnson on driver, Jack is a very close second. (Think what he could've done with today's gear I swear).

Tie between Ben Hogan and Johnny Miller for irons. Two of the best there (in my opinion at least).

Tie between Jack Nicklaus and Jordan Spieth for putting. Don't think you could go wrong with either.

Honorable Mentions are Greg Norman, Sergio Garcia and Ben Crenshaw.

I'm stunned - this is so simple

If you don't have Jack Nicklaus in one of the three spots you lose - don't you get that he won 18 majors? I saw him throughout his career and also Tiger. The two of them were so far and away the best players ever tee to green that any other choice there is dumb founding, even Hogan, unless the rule is that you have to take three because in their prime they were the best putters too.

If you have Greg Norman - you lose- Did you actually watch him on the back nine in majors throughout his career? He was at best the third best player in the weakest era in modern golf history. Certainly on the PGA tour where he made his living. The Euro's had Seve, Faldo and Langer (whose Euro career is a mirror image of Norman's on the PGA tour). I will grant that Greg was an amazing player for 63 holes in the Majors. But we are standing on the tee at 72, tied.

Any winning team must have Nicklaus and Woods on it.

So how about this if you need three

Nelson (you know the guy the robot is named after)

Nicklaus

Woods
