Winter versus summer

TheWahoo

Recommended Posts

I guess I could say that I tend to be a seasonal drinker.   That is, now that summer is here, I will enjoy my Tanqueray and tonic after a round of golf or a Dark and Stormy sitting on the docks with friends and neighbors.   But summer doesn't last and winter will return.   During the winter, I don't have the same need or desire for a cold alcohol beverage.   I have found nothing to drink  during the winter that I enjoy that includes alcohol.   So knowing that summer will end, I am open to suggestions for a good beverage on a cold winter's night.

Yep!  Had one last night.  Many thanks to Foz for the sample on the course a couple of years ago.

In the winter I tend to drink Guinness but I know that isn't for everyone just what I like when it's cooler outside. Year round I enjoy scotch, in the winter I just drink it neat and in the summer I tend to add a couple of frozen granite cubes and a little cold club soda

Good bourbon year round; neat when it's cold out and in mule form when the weather is hot.

Me too. I discovered bourbon when scotch became way too expensive. I love them both, but I drink more bourbon these days.

What's your "every day" pour, so to speak?

Depends whether I'm at home or out. I keep a bottle of Blanton's around the house for sipping. If I'm mixing cocktails it's probably Elijah Craig 12 Year. I'll usually order Bulleit if I'm out running around; their rye offering if it's going in a cocktail.

Elijah Craig is my bourbon of choice.    With that said, I drink more cold beer than anything else these days.   I love a cold beer after a hot round of golf!

Lag 16 is a favorite. If you can find it, try the 12 year cask strength. The smoke and peat is more intense.... plus more alcohol.

I'm with the OP, this is the season for a gin (Tanquerray) and tonic (Schweppes).  Or a cold beer.  Or beer after golf, followed by the G&T when I get home.

In the winter I still like the cold beer, but G&T is out and whisky (as in Scotch) or whiskey (bourbon) is in.  My whisky of choice is Caol Ila, a lighted peated Islay malt.  And I take it the proper way, with just a splash of water, no ice for me.

  • 7 months later...

My usual drinks are whiskeys neat (scotch, rye, bourbon in this order.  Good all year long.

This winter I tried Chartreuse Green, a vegetal liqueur made by French monks.  Neat over ice is OK but much better if put in hot chocolate.  Something completely different and I am glad I tried it.

My preferred winter drink is homemade apple pie warmed up so when I come in from shoveling I can warm up quickly. The summer it's beer or scotch
