How many wedges are in your bag?

Recommended Posts

I have my PW (rsi TP), a 54 and a 58 degree both of which are Mack Daddy's.

Never felt the need to add a 4th wedge never mind a 5th! Saying that I do have a 2 iron and I play Links golf (from Scotland) so very rarely actually use my wedges. More often than not I'm bumping a 7 iron through to PW. So a high lofted wedge selection would not be to my benefit.

I think a question like this would be very much dependent on where you play.

I bet Links golf is a ton of fun...bucket list is to go to Scotland and give it a whirl

"Obviously my iron play is incredible, and when I get going I can get hot, but this course just fits my eye. The shaping of the holes, and just a couple of the doglegs, I'm able to shape shots."

Bending your wedges strong a 1° will add to offset, minimal but it will look different at address.

And yes, Links golf is Amazing. And I've only played a cheap American version of it.... nothing good. Yet!

I carry a vokey 52, 56, and 60 and then my PW from my Ping i set. I actually won't swing a wedge full except the PW. I only hit 3/4, 1/2 swing shots. The 60 I MIGHT use once in 8 rounds.

Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

Yeah I'm with you on this one. Don't think I've hit a "full" 58 in two years. Honestly don't even know what that number is. Hit my 54* 105 yds, and my 50 115. Anything less I'm knocking down a 54. Forty yards and in I'll start using the 58 if I want a lofted shot.

44 - so when I was young it would have been a strong 9 iron -

Callaway MD3 52, 56 and 60.

The PW is 45* I believe, next time I get a set of wedges I think I'll go 50, 54, 58. I wasn't really thinking the first time around.

Your i200 PW is 45° stock.

You could go with a:

49° / 50°

53° / 54°

57° / 58°

61° / 62°

I'd go with the odd numbers if I were to "wedge out" the i200 set.

Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

Actually this is incorrect the Staff C200 is 44 stock. Small but perhaps important difference. Also it's important to recognize that you change the bounce on your wedges when you bend them. At one degree you probably won't notice but you need to be aware of that particularly on your favorite sand iron. I would never monkey with that one in my set.

I've played 5, currently 4.  Actually looking to drop another once I get around to picking up a new set.  My grooves have seen better days.  My current opinion is that the more wedges you have the less acquainted you become with each of them.

I use 5 wedges:

P full shots

G full shots and some chip and run

54 full shots and most chip and run

58 general chipping and some full shots

64 every difficult position

the 64 is more useful for my game, than the driver...

I don't notice a difference at all, 1* is very not much, if it was 3-4 degrees it may be noticeable. It all depends on what you are looking for, it may be better to for some to bend them weaker and and loft, which will also add bounce.

Wow. This thread was eye opening. Seems most play PW with 9i loft. My Titleist 681 PW is 49°. Custom Miura 53 & 58. I use (3) swings on the 53/58 a la Pelz.

  • 4 weeks later...

I carry PW 45, GW 52, SW 56 & LW 60. I can hit a variation of shots with each to suit my needs. Pitching and chipping is the most natural part of my game so turning a 60 into a 64 is easier for me. So no real need to carry any more wedges. But if it helps your game then i'd say do it!

64* wedge has been my number one scoring tool for some time now, but it's sidelined to manage longer courses. 60* wedge with a good c grind and practice fills the void pretty well.

Going to be interesting to see what, if any gaps at the top of my bag I might get with the Mizuno 900 tour irons and my current hybrid. Might have to consider simplifying my wedge setup.

Maybe something like pw(46), 52, 58
