Your course design philosophy

The architects thread got me to thinking about how would I design a course-what would be my basic philosophy.    Mine would be do design a course to accommodate all skill levels and play desires.   I would challenge the skills of the better players-the single digit guys and make it enjoyable for the less skilled.   I would do this through tee selection.   My design would have multiple tee choices both in number and location.   That's why I like Gary Player courses, he will challenge skill, but also provide an enjoyable venue for us hackers.

Minimalistic. Short grass everywhere, NO trees, enough water, lots of sand on the left. Might have went overboard, but I have this all dreamed up. Basically a mix of Augusta/St. Andrews/various other links courses.

#1 Par 4 - 435 yard sand on left at 250-300

#2 Par 4 - 465 yard creek at 310 guarded bunker green

#3 Par 3 - 165 yard crowned green, surrounded by sand

#4 Par 5 - 577 yard straight lined with bunkers left, water behind green.

#5 Par 4 - 304 yard slight dogleg left, fairway sloping right bunkers at 290 left and right, runway up to green. Water long.

#6 420 Par 4 - 489 dogleg right, bunker at the corner left, stream from 300 - to green bunker right of green

#7 Par 3 199 yard elevated tee, safe left, bunker from tee to green right

#8 Par 5 597 yard dogleg right, sand left, water right of green

#9 Par 4 322-355 yard downhill, sand front/left/back. Largest green on course

#10 Par 5 589 yard dogleg left, uphill to green from 350 in, sand left.

#11 Par 3 135-155 yard sand island green.

#12 Par 4 490 yards downhill, tall stuff left and right, heavily guarded green.

#13 Par 3 212 Peninsula green, bailout right, bunker long.

#14 Par 4 478 yards left sloping fairway, mounds surrounding green, sand right.

#15 Par 4 318 yards 15-20' uphill front to back sloping green with sand long mounds left and right.

#16 Par 4 481 yards straight, creek 300, sand 240 left 260 right, bunkers left mounds back.

#17 Par 5 599 yards double dogleg water right, sand left lined fairway, elevated green, sand everywhere.

#18 Par 4 444 short fairway, forced lay up at 240, with ditch at 250-300, sand island green

7299 yards from the Tips

For a bit of nostalgia and for all the new members.....  here is a thread about MGS designing a course.  That was 4 years ago.  I wonder when it will be finished?

There is a barren piece of land by my house I drive past at least twice a day. It's perfect for a Heathland course. I've got the whole thing designed in my head. Very similar to what I posted up there. if I ever win the lottery I will design and build a course there. It shall be called "The Tundra"

It will have Senior Tees. I much like Tigers design in TX. It would have a short course. And 5 sets of tees from 5000 - 7900 just in case they'd want to host an event. But standard Black tees would be 7299

The loop in my head crisscrosses a spring fed creek with limestone bluffs; routed through a stand of old growth live oaks.

For me I would design a course that is fair and challenging. A course that has great variety in the holes and makes a player think about each shot. Personally the course I am a member at is exactly that. There are such a great variety and many holes force me to take a club other then driver. I love courses that give you that risk reward on tee shots where you could pull out the big stick, but the smart play is a 3 wood or iron off the tee to position yourself well for the next shot.

For me like almost everyone has said it will be fun and challenging for all with multiple tees, and teeing locations. It would have risk/reward holes for all.. the risk reward hole for the forward tees might be a hick-up for the ones further back. as well as a drivable par 4 on each side.. It will have a dramatic feature, a canyon shot, a waterfall, A huge boulder something cool but dramatic.. and 27 holes so that there is always a gap between players.. you might play the first and second 9's, the next group the second and third, and so on... that way you would never feel rushed.. and we could use any of the holes to create a championship layout...

Just my thoughts..

Just my thoughts..

The Santa Ana GC outside Albuquerque has 3 nines and puts players off like that.  A slow group can really mess things up.

I would much prefer the approach used at Ocotillo GC in Chandler, AZ.  It's a Troon managed course so it's pretty nice.  They always have one nine out of rotation for maintenance.  One less thing for golfers to not have to deal with.

I'm big on tree lined, natural creeks, roughed in looking bunkers, a reachable par 4 and par 3's that all play in different directions (an elevation change) so no 2 play into the same wind. My favorite design feature is a large tree that defends an approach into a green.

Actually I had to dig this up as I'm still working on this gem:

I've actually designed several golf courses in The Golf Club.

So much fun.

I'll start a thread for The Golf Club 2 when it comes out in two weeks.

I was gonna buy the golf club and then found out 2 is in a couple months. When it's out I'll grab it and we can start a MGS community with the new system.

Oh yours is awesome! Didn't want to one up you at all.

Please check out the old design thread and my awesome early concepts lol

I know. Just making a laugh. yours does look like a nice track that I'd play. #10 on my home course has a tall Oak tree guarding the green. It's a B-word!

Yup - I already preordered it for PS4.  I believe societies are platform specific - but courses created can be played on any system (XB1, PS4, or PC)

Unfortunately, every male from hackers to pros would ignore all of the 7 sets of tees and only play from the tip, so they can "see everything".

I'd label the back tee hackers, wannabes and pros. Middle tee, low handicap, forward good and average golfer, then ladies and season players tee, last junior tee.

Front nine par 37

Back nine par 36

Featuring 700+ yard par 6. 100 par 3, 250 par 3. Back nine with 3 par 3s, par 4s, and 3 par 5s.

I designed a course for my senior project in high school. Picked out 130 acres on a topographical map and went to work. Had everything down to sprinkler heads. Wish the teacher would have gave that back. He was a golf nut and kept it. It was a lot of fun to create.

With all due respect to my friend Shankster I would only play his course once. The average golfer drives the ball 210 which means he can't cover the 200 on 18. You've built a hole that doesn't work for nearly everyone that comes to play your course - who do you think you are? Jack Nicklaus? :)

I have no architectural abilities but I'd be happy to help anyone in their fundraising. I'm good at that.

There is a hole on tour that I stole the idea from. I'll see if I can find it.

Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

What they play on tour and what I would have fun playing are two different things altogether. At 210 I have about a 10 percent chance of putting the ball on the green. That's a lot better chance than 95 percent of the people who play golf. :)

Perhaps you could add another set of tees that avoids the chasm or gives the rest of the world a chance to drive over it. Leave me 160 and I'm hitting the same club as a touring pro from 190-200 anyway.

14 at Westchester Country club is similar to the hole you're describing - well 14 on the tour routing of the course. It's 5 if you play there as a guest.
