SPY VIP Tony Covey MGS Posted August 21, 2010 SPY VIP Share Posted August 21, 2010 These came in for review early last week. Because of a computer mishap (it blew up), I couldn't do much until I got it fixed (rebuilt better, faster, stronger). Like a couple of others we've talked about already, Wilson doesn't quite have the footprint they once did, but if these irons are any indication, they're still more than worthy of considerations. Justin66
I think they're pretty. There's something about a plain black and silver look that's just striking to me. Golf magazine's opinion-based model test summed these up, performance-wise, as average (not a direct quote). I'm curious to see if MGS tests these, and what they'd say about these clubs. Tyk
I'm guessing they're going to be in the upcoming forged cavity back review, which is why we keeping seeing all these nice iron pics! jamo
Those are pretty good looking. I like how they add a little weight to the toe with that logo without making it look ugly. And example of that being ugly is the Ping clubs that have the little tungsten plugs that say "W".
HillWilliam
I've been playing the FG Tours most of the summer and absolutely love them. From 175 in I feel like I'm hitting at pins, not hitting and hoping.. I play to an 8 hcp and feel much more in control with these. I'm able to work the ball, control long punch shots with no loss of distance compared with my previous cast clubs. If name dropping to impress your golfing buddies is what floats your boat, then perhaps you should look elsewhere. But if you're searching for a forged cavity back iron with great feedback and predictable clubbing of distances, then give it a try.
cheymike
I really like the look of these. Love the top line look. I think they're pretty. Justin66
I really like the look of these. Love the top line look. That means W/S only gave "average" advertising money to the mag. LOL! LOL! I hate how Golf mag and Golf Digest do those "club test". Golf's seems more like a buddies trip- it's the same core group of people every year. Their iron reviews mostly had "club digs more than expected" than any other complaint. I just think "why not change your ball position, or just stop hitting the d@mn things fat? Maybe you'll get better results". Of course, the "it" brands get better "reviews", while the W/S's and Srixons- from what I know of each company and from the things I've heard, aren't slouches- are considered "average"... I don't get it. GD isn't much better- they line up "experts" to validate all the new "innovations", but won't give any more info than topline/sole thickness... But what's .2mm, really? Granted, if you went from a Nike Machspeed to a Bridgestone J38, I'm pretty sure you'd see a difference. But a Nike Vr blade to a J38? Unless you have calipers, I think it'd be hard to tell. I just LOVE the journalistic integrity of the two magazines. "Fair and unbiased" my butt. I've called them both on it in emails... never heard from Golf, GD gave a half-@ss "apology" with the "we strive to do out best" BS line. I sent them a second email asking if they turly believed what they were preaching, why not show it off? They didn't respond to that one... Keep up the good work MGS. Everytime something like this comes up, it reminds me that we're fortunate you guys and your fact-based reviews exist. Now if everyone could get on board this train... Xamilo
I ain't convinced about the top line. I would have expected a much thinner one from a "players iron". It looks quite similar to my Ci7s top line. Anyway, GREAT looking irons. Simple and elegant will never go out of date... What stock shaft do these bring? Agreed...I love both Golf Digest and Golf for what they add to the game of golf but they both pander to their advertisers. Their equipment input should be taken with more than a grain of salt. They can be useful in that they can describe what type of new clubs are available and what design elements they employ, but nothing replaces hitting them yourselves.
