For a few weeks now, my putting has the worst part of my game. I've been hitting greens in reg like it's nobody's business but I can't seem to finish. My time spent on the practice green has also been getting a little mundane as of late.... so I want to know, what is the most effective, fun, or most unique putting drills that you use?

I am interested to know what drills people suggest, because i am lousy putter too, but have developed some due to one drill.

I have three balls and start 30cm from a hole, i mark the spot with coin or tee. The first one i try to put to hole so that it barely goes there, the second with mid speed and the last should be so that it hits the back of the hole and has the most speed. After i have succeed putting every ball with that pattern, i move my marker back i.e. 10 cm and so on... if one of those does not go in, i start again from that distance. I do this drill especially before rounds and it gives me confidence for short putts.

Hit putts from 4 feet with the trail hand only without flipping.  Take setup with both hands on the putter; take lead hand off and put it on your hip... putt.  When you can confidently make putts, use both hands.

The clock drill is always good for uphill/downhill/right/left putting.

I do two basic drills.

1.  Roll the ball over a dime about 16" in front of the ball;  use different length strokes when doing this drill.   This is about starting the ball on your intended line no matter the stroke length.  If you can't start your ball online,  you can't learn to read greens.

2.  Ladder drill to work on distance.  Or I start in the center of the green and just roll the ball to the fringe.

I know it isn't very exciting,  but the first is easy to do at home since you aren't focusing on making putts or distance,  you just want to start the ball on your intended line.

The ladder drill is a good one for distance control.

I also like to putt 3 to 4 footers until I make 10 in a row.  Work around the hole, so each one breaks a little different.  If you make 9 and miss one, start over.  The first few times, it could take a half-hour to get it done.  After some practice, you'll do it first time.  If you can make every 3 to 4 footer, the longer ones become less critical.

The last thing is to understand statistics.  If you're always putting from 30 or 40 feet, you're going to 3-putt a fair amount.  From 30 feet, the pros 3-putt a more than they 1-putt.  Pros make only about half from 8 feet.  The best way to decrease the number of putts is to hit it closer to the hole.

I picked up a recommendation from another thread for a book titled "Putting Out of Your Mind." It is a super quick read and in the last week or so has improved my putting just by thinking about it difderently.

The book also provides some tips on practicing, which amounts to most of the drills that have already been mentioned here.

There's a few pros that play at my club that gave me the best putting drill. Focus on 3 foot putts and 30 foot putts. Your goal is to be automatic at 3 feet. For the 30 footers you want to leave it inside 3 feet. I think Phil went over something like this in his short game drills. They told me one of the biggest mistakes amateurs make when practicing putting is trying to practice making 10 footers. That's time that could be spent drilling 3 footers.
