What's wrong with Bubba?

Rickp

Recommended Posts

This year he seems very uncomfortable playing golf. Not sure if it's his weight loss/body type change. It's almost like when David Duval redid his body type it ruined his game and was never the same player.

I'm not a huge Bubba fan but don't want to C anyone go "south" this way.

Watching Bubba playing Travelers today, a course he's owned and he looks like he's lost.

I guess we'll C what happens.

He honestly looks disinterested.

That's true also. Why though?

Complacent?

Bubba is playing a Volvik ball. That's the problem. It doesn't spin. Makes it tough to shape shots.

Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

Really, I think if that was the problem he would dump Volvik for a ball that works for him.

I don't think Bubba would leave money or major tourneys on the table.

Depends on how much Volvik is paying. He could also just be having  abad year. To be fair he does have 4 top 10's

True he has had 4 top 10's but he somehow seems "different".

Dunno could just be me being critical. Old folks can be that way sometimes.

Youre right though. He does look a little different.  Part of his issue seems to be his approach shots. He is opposite of most folks. He is actually getting worse as he gets closer to the green for approach shots.

Could something be going on with those Glide 2.0's?

I'm willing to put money down that's it's all mental for both of them.  When you have past success at the level they are at and then start a little downhill slide it's tough to reconcile that in your mind.  Then you start pushing and getting frustrated and it's just a vicious cycle.

Probably right and both of them just started young families. That can be a huge distraction.

Bubba has made two changes this year. His ball and his body. I don't know what happened with his body, he just got skinny for some reason. His ball he changed for money. It's not a tour ball or anything near one. It's not even a Snell or a Vice or a precept. But he's playing it because it's pink (sometimes yellow and white) and because they are paying him and he's the only guy playing it.

I will second Meyers take there. If my mind my isn't in the game I'm not really interested and play like crap.

Tack on playing with a crowd, sponsors, fans, money, rules... it would be tough to maintain a solid mental game as a pro.

Not necessarily true. Its a 4 piece Urethane golf ball. To say it is not up to the standards of a Snell or Vice or Precept is unequivocally wrong. Granted it may not be right for Bubba but it is used heavily on the LPGA tour.

It has also been used on the Champions Tour. Again not saying it isnt right for Bubba but it is still a good golf ball

Well it doesn't feel like a quality golf ball and money talks on the tours. I'm willing to bet Bubba didn't go to it because he thought he could improve his game.

The story was, Bubba was watching the long ball championship last year, and he contacted them about playing their ball.

I have never played there 4-piece tour ball, can only find the 2-piece ball around here.

On Thursday Bubba looked like he was all kinds of frustrated.

He has these little patches on occasion not that that's much of a consolation. He's admittedly a streaky feel player who won't play well at a course that doesn't suit his eye (gotta respect the honesty) and I bet that has a lot to do with it, everyone knows when you're in a funk it's hard to find anything you enjoy about it. There's also the family thing mentioned earlier, his life doesn't revolve around golf nearly as much as it used to and that wasn't much to start with. Don't get me wrong I really like Bubba, all I'm saying is he has a lot that could be effecting his play but I think he'll get his form back before long.

His putting is definitely not helping either.  I don't know if he is reading them wrong or what, but it doesn't appear he is burning any edges.  He is missing long, short, left and right.

Yup, I watched a bit of the Travelers and his putting was not very good.

I've gamed the Volviks, very high quality balls. Good distance, comparable to "tour" grade balls I've played such as the B-300 and Pro V1. Just because it's pink doesn't make it low quality. Absolutely no issues putting plenty of spin on them. Bubba has head problems, not ball problems.

I agree! Why the hell would he make that move. He's going to end up losing money on this ball deal if he keeps missing cuts!

I agree. Btw I bought a couple and used them side by side with my pro v1. I definitely didn't like them especially on the green. I do like the colors though.

Bubba has always had a loose swing anyway. People who play like that are prone to major streaks. He's still got it in him to pop out of nowhere and take a tournament by storm.

Also could be his attitude. Maybe he's finally started catching flack for being such a crabapple on the course and in the clubhouse. Being voted by your fellow players and the most unlikeable guy on tour can't be good for your psyichi

T5 at the Zurich is his best result, he may be just going through a "dad" season, not practicing as much, more involved with his kids and maybe he's not enthused because he's got other things going on...These guys are human and it seems to happen quite a bit on tour.
