Ty Pettit
I'll start with a course called "Thunderhawk" in northern Illinois. My buddy did some research for us as we traveled to Wisconsin for the US Open and we were amazed by this track. They have a great website that grabs your interest, but it's not until you see the sign out front that you are wowed: Designed by....ROBERT TRENT JONES JR. It's a MUNI! Designed by an architecture Legend. Course was incredible, big forgiving fairways, undulating greens that rolled true. If you're in the Lake Forest, Illinois area or near it this course a Must Play Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy downlowkey
downlowkey
You guys are probably getting tired of me mentioning this track, but it's just that good. Ballyneal Golf & Hunt Club in Holyoke, CO (middle of nowhere) Getting there is a bit of a chore but you set foot on the property and it's immediately evident this place is really special. It's the kind of facility traditionalists dream about. Built on a sand cap, Ballyneal is pure links on the plains. It's walking only and they have a stable of knowledgeable caddies. There are no official tee boxes, so based on what the wind is doing and how tough you want a particular hole to play, pick a spot and let 'er rip. Last but certainly not least, it's a Tom Doak design...nuff said. https://www.ballyneal.com/ Side note, after you're done chasing the white ball for the day, you can head out to bag some birds for dinner. I hope heaven is something like Ballyneal, because I could happily spend an eternity at this gem. Hackabilly
Two near the Black Hills area of South Dakota that I really enjoyed were Southern Hills in Hot Springs, SD and Rocky Knolls somewhere near Custer State Park. Both were beautifully kept and had their share of challenges. Also pretty much any course in Sedona, AZ is worth playing, but I definitely enjoyed the views at Sedona Golf Resort. tommc23
I love to play Hideaway Hills in Kresgeville PA its got a ton of elevation changes and some awesome views. There is a par 5 that is on top of the hill and if you hit a nice drive you can reach it with a mid iron which is fun but the next hole is a pain and it makes up for the easy par 5. Joeydarts
Circling Raven, Worley Idaho is a must if you are ever in the area. Great views throughout the course and you rarely see other golfers. Another big plus is the risk reward factor playing driver on several holes. I also recently played Coyote Moon in Truckee, Ca. and was somewhat disappointed. Gorgeous course but odd layout after 13 and expensive for what it was. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

Kgilliss142
We played the these two in North Dakota, I know, your saying North Dakota?? But, Hawktree Golf Club and Bully Pulpit Golf Course are two of the most beautiful courses and scenery. The Bully Pulpit is located in the historic area of Medora and is carved out of the Badlands. https://youtu.be/Xwez0pWTFz8 Hawktree is in Bismarck and is probably the hardest. They have unique bunkers as they use the byproduct from the lignite coal in North Dakota - www.hawktree.com If you happen to be in the area, try these two out. Not only is it one the best military courses in the world, it is one of the best courses I have ever played. I returned back to the states in 2008 and this last year I have been applying for jobs to get back over there again so I can renew my membership. They thought it would be a good idea to play from the tips. I'm a 15.3 handicap. It didn't go so well for me. Shot 94. Still, it was a nice course. JBH
Here are a few that I've played at during my travels around the states. Brickyard Crossing at Indianapolis, IN. By far my favorite course to date. Extremely beautiful, and extremely unique. You literally play a few holes in the middle of the speedway. The Fort near Indianapolis, IN. I played here because it was designed by the same guy who designed the Brickyard Crossing. Absolutely amazing course. Niagara Frontier Country Club at Niagara Falls, NY, is a great course to play at. Kelly Plantation near Destin, FL is a beautiful course as well. Some of the tee boxes are feet away from someone's backyard pool.
