How do you know when it's time to replace your wedges?

STUDque

Recommended Posts

Besides the insatiable desire to get new equipment, how can you tell when your wedges are truly ready for a refresh? I bought mine used on eBay and have had them for 5 years since. I keep the grips clean and hit them up with a groove sharpener 2-3 times per season. I look to make some changes in the type/loft/shaft in my next set of wedges but would like to gauge how much life these have left.

5 years seems like quite a while, depending on how much you play. They look well-used! Cleveland RTX 2.0 are on good sale right now!

It was a combo of both for me, wanting new clubs and mine were looking weathered. They still performed okay, I just wanted something new. But honestly as long as their doing what you need them to do, keep 'em...

...unless you like new & shiny. Then open that wallet and drop some bills.

When you got your new set, was there a noticeable difference in the ball action on the green?

When I've thrown it in a pond. That's when it's time to buy a new one.

I used the same wedges for five or six years and only changed because of the groove rule. I've had the same bottom two wedges since then. They look worn, more worn than yours. They work fine and I play a course that has deep rough and firm greens.

You could also spend about $10 on eBay for a groove tool which will resharpen the grooves. I've got one and it will bring old grooves back to life 👍

I've used one about 5 total times now. Is there any limit to how many times you can do that? I don't want to dig to China in my grooves.

Maybe I'm just cynical, but I just don't see how a golf ball with a soft cover is going to wear out grooves on a steel club face.... at least for a looooong time. I use my stuff for many years before the urge to get new stuff overtakes my better sense of judgement.

I've used my SM4's since they came out. I see no reason at all to replace them.... other than just wanting new stuff.

If your wedges do exactly what you want then to do, don't change them. If you want a new look for them, check out Tigernick.com, for $55/wedge, He's got a lot of refinishes, painting and weight/ COG mods he can do. His black chrome finish is pretty damn slick.

Just a note, if he does re-groove them for you, they will be square and nonconforming if that matters to you.

That's a good point. I started this thread because I can't help but wonder if there's better options with more action but my short game has been solid as of late (knock on wood) so why change?

I'm at 5 year mark and not ready yet. Probably same condition as yours. I don't like changing wedges, takes me a while to get comfortable with them.

I just put my worn out Taylormade's back in the bag. I don't think I'll ever find a set of wedges I actually like. No one makes what I am looking for...

Shanks Grind Wedges? Nah, I will use my other sides name. Alan Smith wedges...

Is there something to be said about letting wedges wear for more bite? Like that ole wives tale that rusty wedges spin harder.

Short answer, when there is a hole through the face.

I'm kidding, but you should probably replace yours soon. Mine look the same way. When the grooves are worn down so much, you loose a ton of spin...

OK so what about making the switch from 52, 56, 60 to 50, 54, 58? I'd love to hear from anybody that made this transition either direction with regards to how the lofts changed the way they approach (no pun intended) a course

I would personally prefer the 50, 54, 58 route. Yes, a 60° can be useful, but it's pretty hard to hit from a longer distance. Just my opinion...

I like my 52/56/60 combination - RTX 3.0. The combo works well for me. Although I have a pretty big gap between my PW - 45 and the 52. Has not been a problem so far.

With an unlimited wallet? Vokey SM

On a budget? My research has only just begun

I really want to get the next wedges brand new so it'll need to be a careful decision.

I go with odd numbers. 53, 57...

I'm eyeing some new ones though...

49.5, 52.5, 55.5, 59.5... yes the .5 matters... I think.

Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

Can you honestly equate the .5 to a yardage difference?
