So some of you know I'm on vacation and while we are at a golf resort. And since it's our anniversary I wasn't 100% intent on playing but figured I'd but the range and putting green if nothing else.

As a result to save room in the trunk I only threw in my driver, 6 iron, gap wedge and putter.

I ended up going out as a solo with Michelle riding along. Borrowed a bag from the pro shop and threw in two sleeves of Wilson Duo Spin from the golf organizer in the trunk.

I played everything down, no Mulligan's. I decided to make it easy on myself and play the white tees from 5800 yards since I was limited in the long end of the bag.

I shot 88 and was very pleased. I did hit the ball very well off the tee so that helped a ton. Thank You Srixon Z565!!

My first hole I had 115 in. Too much for my GW so I had to choke down on a 3\4 6 and sure enough 15 feet from the pin. Wow. Had never done that before.

Anyway. I thought how much of this was because I didn't try to agonize over a club and focused more on the shot at hand. Or in some cases the 6 iron left me well short of trouble and I only had to worry about hitting a good Wedge.

I'm not sure I will try this again. But it was very fun and gave me something to think about.

Anyone else ever played a full round on a regular course with a limited bag.

I have really started doing something similar in practice sessions - not only hitting 3 clubs, but hitting different clubs to different yardages than I would normally hit them.

150 yard 6 irons.  90 yard 8 irons. Low punch shots at the 50 yard basket with my PW.  It really has given me a better overall feel for my swing.

Not with 4 clubs but with 8 or 9 and really enjoyed it. Bought and SKB hard case designed to carry 8 to 9 clubs. Case looks like a rifle case and just seems easier to deal with when traveling for work. A lot of times I carry 4 or 5 clubs as I know I will be lucky juat to get to the range but recently I knew there was a 50/50 chance I would get 1 day off on a 10 day trip and sure enough got to play 18 which I did from 6200 yards. Had a blast creating shots...

I used to jump on and play one club rounds at the course before dark. Ole 5 iron got some quality work.

I'll bet the limited section made your round with your wife more enjoyable too. Hit a good shot? Hey look at that! Hit a bad shot? Well what can you do I've only got 3 clubs anyway.

It was a great day. Beautiful 80 degree temps nice breeze.

The Hyatt Chesapeake Resort on the Eastern Shore of MD. About an hour and half from Ocean City.

Oddly enough she was not as impressed as I was with my last shot to 10 feet on the last hole to save par.

Because I took a drop from the cart path. She said it was "because you moved it away from the concrete"

Lol Tough Crowd.

First, that's awesome!

Second, I gotta try this. Idk if it will necessarily help my score but I have a feeling it will help me realize that "so and so" club isn't the only one to go to when you're said yards out. Broaden my horizons a bit.

Thanks.

It was fun and took my mind completely off club selection.

Although the idea may not be good for the club companies. Two iron sets would cost a lot less than 8.

Occasionally we play where if you win a hole you can eliminate a club from the other guys bag, it's fun when you have to start getting creative with your shot making.

Back in high school we used to play 5i, putter rounds a lot.  Only 2 clubs you get.  It was pretty amazing that the scores in those round were usually within a few shots of playing with a full bag.

Nice work! I host a 3 club tourney that's a lot of fun, makes selection a no-brainer but putting with a hybrid or wood is tough

The first time I went to Bandon I only took even number irons. I figured give my caddy a break and everything is some sort of partial knock down shot anyway. I think for out there I could get away w the following set up:

3 wood, driving iron, 5, 8, P, SW, putter.

... It is alway a great exercise to play with less than a full bag. It can teach you a ton about creativity and concentration. About 10 years ago I was playing an unfamiliar mountain course in NC with my best friend and I wasn't giving it my full concentration, shooting 3 over on the front. He was having a very bad day and making the turn he was just really discouraged. So I told him I would give him 3 mulligans anywhere he wanted them and I would only use my 5 iron. That got him back involved and it really forced me to focus.

... I ended up shooting 2 over on the back and it taught me quite a bit. The course lay out just really went well with a 5 iron, as in hitting one off the tee usually left me with another full 5 iron or just a knockdown 5 iron. Par 5's were both Tin Cup like as I used 5 iron, 5 iron and I believe it was a 5 iron. I learned concentration is always of paramount importance, creativity is a huge bonus instead of thinking about mechanics and length off the tee isn't as important as I thought it was. I highly recommend using just one club of your choice if you have a day to just get in a practice round.

The Men's League at our club does an annual one-club 9-hole event.  Each player gets to pick which club and we all play from the same tees we're assigned for regular Men's League matches.  Most of the lower handicaps pick a 7 iron and most of the higher handicappers pick a 6 or 7 hybrid.  Putting can be a real challenge, but otherwise it's a lot of fun.  (There's usually some beer involved.)  We just did our event last night and the winning score was 44.
