What's your "Great White Buffalo?"

STUDque

Recommended Posts

I'd like to hear about everyone's Great White Rhino. In other words, the one that got away.

This could be a club you loved but lost, broke, or sold and miss dearly. You can never get her back and it makes you cry

I had this amazing old Callaway SW. Absolutely loved it! It was from an old GI set. Unfortunately, it broke about 6 different times...

A set of Mizuno MP-32s...loved that set but traded it in for a "more forgiving set" as I had my first child due and figured I would play less so I needed more forgiveness. What I needed was a someone to say wtf are you doing?!? Ha ha ha... The search goes on for a replacement set...

I had a Ping Zing 1 iron that filled the job of my Driver, 3 wood, and 5 wood. I used to get the weirdest looks at the course. All the older Gents (I was around 16) with their Corey Pavin looks, was like dropping the needle on a record...

Out played most of them with not a single wood in the bag.

Let my dads buddy borrow it. Never saw it again.

I had a girlfriend once that was ooh la la!!  Does that count?  But I am really glad that never worked out, because I have the best wife that anyone could ask for, and she has a better golf swing than I do.   ;)

I've never gotten rid of any gear that I felt I just had to get back. I have regretted getting rid of one set of irons though.

I built a set of Dynacraft Pro Cavities in 2003 or so that were incredible. I shot some of my best rounds with them. Just the perfect Club head size, topline, everything perfect. Then vanity struck and I thought "I'm playing so well, I deserve a new set of clubs, I should buy a set of Mizunos". Well I bought some Mizuno MX-23's and sold the Dynacrafts. I never shot close to as good a round with those Mizunos. They looked good though.

I learned from that. Play whatever works, forget vanity.

Mixuno MP-32'S...sold them because I convinced myself with my first child on the way I wouldn't have as much time to play or practice (which was true), and needed more forgiving clubs (not true). Picked up a set of Callaway X-20 tours and struggled for a few seasons with them. Sad thing is I got down to an 7.8 index with those mp-32s and was hitting them so well when I got rid of them. Why I did that is one of the world's greatest mysteries like the Bermuda triangle or Bigfoot😁😂🤣

Kind of ironic that this thread gets resurrected almost exactly a year later and the regret is still the same. I wish I had any equipment I felt that way about.

The closest thing I can think of is an old PowerBilt 5W from my first set. It was the first wood I could hit reliably and I was pretty good with it for long-ish punch shots under trees. The shaft broke on me and I managed to lose the head.

The original Cleveland Niblick 42 degree!   I could use it all over the golf course with some pretty cool results.   It was heavier with loft than my SSW .  That Niblick was like a tank and it could cut through concrete...  No worries about rocks, roots, fossils, road graders, etc.  That puppy would plow right on through em...  ;)

Rule #1: Never let someone you don't live with borrow your favorite club.

And if they do live with you, you still need to watch them like a hawk. My oldest has already liberated my Rocketballz 4h, and I find my new F8 driver in her bag from time to time.

Then again, my dad's MacGregor Tourney 3 wood and his Hogan Edge 2 iron used to show up in my bag all the time when I was in high school.

Karma's a ******.

For me, it's my old Ping B61 putter. The 61 had a plumber's neck but was heel shafted instead of center shafted, and it was kind of hard to find.

I tapped the ground just a little too hard with it after losing the prior day's loop money, and the shaft just snapped on me. That taught me a valuable lesson; I've never slammed a club into the ground again.

What's in the bag:

I had a mint Macgregor Jack Nicklaus “8802” style with a real deal wrap leather grip when I was in high school. It was old as dirt then but had been taken great care of. Still wish I hadn't sold it for other clubs. Didn't even putt that well with it and it's probably not worth anything, but would love to have it still. Haven't seen a comparable one for decent money in years.
