Saving grips

Recommended Posts

Got a NEW set of irons with graphite shafts, but don't like the midsize grip installed. Any way to remove it without scratching the graphite shaft? Looked on the tube and just can't see myself sticking a rod or tool in between the shaft and grip and then twisting it until you could pull it off. Steel shaft yes, but graphites no, or will the tape inside protect the shaft.

If you get a pump with a needle on the end, you can inject grip tape solvent between the grip and shaft and they will slide right off.

If you have a hook blade on your utility knife you won't nick the graphite. It's worth the few bucks it takes to buy that blade at hardware store.

Air compressor with some solvent will also work.

Sorry let me rephrase, I actually would like to save these midsize grips because they are still new.

The needle and solvent will help you save the grips. It's kind of a tricky process so I definitely recommend watching someone do it on YouTube first. The key is to use more solvent than you think is necessary.

Even still it'll take a good bit of elbow grease.

I bought one of those grip removal tools from Amazon for like $20 I believe. It has already paid for itself several times. So easy to remove, changing grips is a breeze now.

Don't sweat it. Use a hook-blade and cut them right off. Easy as pie.

But you don't get to save them this way, that's the downside.

A lot depends on how they were installed.  2" grip tape?  Easy with a needle and injector.  3/4" spiraled tape, good luck!

Guess it would also depend if this was a 1 time project or something you were looking to do regularly until you figured out which grip you liked ($$$).

https://www.golfworks.ca/pressurized-golf-grip-remover/p/GS6/

This remover works well, you could also use it with an air compressor, but it will remove the grip safely on its own, ready to use again, in like 10 seconds.

Never tried saving the grip, my coach always says a syringe with a bit of gasoline under it should get rid of the tape but like I said I've never done it myself. I've never had issues using a razor to cut the grip off on graphites, just don't gouge into it.
