What's your favorite type of hole?

We've had the question asking what your favorite hole is at your home course, but what about your overall favorite hole to play in general.

 

Do you like par 3s, 4s, or those long par 5s? Do you like doglegs or prefer something a little easier? Maybe you enjoy hitting over water?

 

I prefer par 4s. I feel like they give me my best chances for birdies. I also prefer it to be a little challenging, with maybe some water to hit over.

Tight, house lining on both side, slight dogleg left under 400 yard par 4, bunkers guarding both side water in front. Slightly elevated fairway approach with short irons or wedge. 2 may be 3 tier fast green sloping back to front would be a bonus.

 

That's my poison an gladly take it. I've got the antidote.

No trees. 385 - 485. Slight elevation change. Heavily Guarded green with a forced carry. Back to front slope, rolling quick. And no trees. Not even little ones.

I like dog leg right par 5s. That's when the green light is on!

 

If I've had a few bad holes in a row, please bring on any par 3 to break my slump. Something about that one shot at the green that really gets me going.

I love par 4s that aren't too long and have a lot of elevation change with water around the greens protecting it from being close to drivable.

Short par 4's around 330 in length, with trouble if you miss the fairway, or green. They set up so well as risk reward.

I love reachable par 5s that include at least water in front of the green. I also like par 3s, any par 3s, that require a forced carry.

I really like short par 3s. We have a 120 yard par 3 at the Country Club I work at and since my wedges are my strongest part of my game, I'm almost guaranteed to make birdie or par.

What degree wedge do you typically hit to this 120 yarder?

... Love reachable par 5's in the 480-520 range that allow a run up even if half the front is guarded by sand or water. And a short par 4 that calls for strategy off the tee with some risk reward depending on how good your ball striking is on that day.

Exactly. I feel like I'm not as good at par 3s as I should be. They should be easy birdie and easier par holes, but sometimes they're not.

My home 9 is a dogleg left, par 4. I typically play a small fade as a lefty, so it's usually perfect. Well, more often than not I end up hitting a bomb off the tee that is straight as an arrow and usually gets close to rolling OB.

What degree wedge do you typically hit to this 120 yarder?

Depending on the pin location, I'll either hit an easy 50* (back pin) or a full 54*

520 yard Par 5, Elevated tee, slight left to right with a bend at 220. Tree lined on the right with a small green surrounded by bunkers.

Short par 4's. Really good ones will have a ton of temptation and risk/reward, presenting a number of options off the tee, up to and around the green. Riviera 10 is a good example.

For the same reasons PGG lists above, I like short Par 5s. I love the risk of going at a green with a hybrid or fairway wood vs playing to a number and attacking the pin with a wedge

I like a long Par 4. Im not long off the tee, but laying 1 and still 190+ out just let's me rip my second shot. I feel if I make Bogey I've accomplished something.

 

I have a hole in mind at local city course 16 at Foster Park. As many times as I've played it, which is a lot, I've never made par.

I love a reachable par 5 with a forced carry, nice risk reward element

I'm not a really long hitter so I rely more on shot making and thinking my way around a course then overpowering it so I like tricky par 4s and 5s that take away a long hitter's advantage, throw in hazards and traps that force everyone to play position golf and I'm a happy camper. Make it a short game focused setup and I'm on cloud nine.

do not get me wrong..I like reachable par 5's and drivable par 4's.. I really like a hole that makes me think, one with a ton of options.. then depending on my mood I can play it different ways.. I can grip it and rip it or play smart..

I like challenging holes - lots of bunkers. I hate holes that have lots of water on the left that are like sirens calling my golf ball home (I'm a lefty)

My personal favourite is a shorter par 4 dog leg either way. Where 3 or 4 iron gets you to the final stretch of the hole and having 150-100 left, or taking driver out and carrying trees can put you on the green. A couple of sand traps, false front, or water to make you hit a good second shot

100 yard par 5's are my favorites but for some reason I never find them on the courses that I play.

 

Seriously I've played so many great holes that I'm not sure I could pinpoint any single attribute. I do enjoy holes that offer variety through different tee boxes and potential pin placements on the green.

 

ST Pete Country club has four or five holes with tee boxes that allow for water to play as lateral or forced carry and/or straight away or dog leg. That's great for members that they can get a different look.

A straight par 4 with a tapered landing area that has bunkers on the right side and trees on the left. It should really make you question hitting driver. But be rewarding to those that pull it off. Length wise it should play a 5 or 6 iron approach if you chose 3 wood or 7-9 iron if you crushed a driver.

 

The green would be slightly elevated sloped back to front, right to left. It would be guarded by a high lipped kidney shaped bunker on the left front.
