How do you choose a new putter?

Have you had a fitting or been on a SAM lab??

This was an eye opener for me. Helped me really narrow the scope of what works for my stroke. After years of guessing and buying putter after putter I now know what I should look for..

And I agree with a previous post...when you find one that works it will stay in the bag for a long time!

This doesn't cure the putter ho disease though., you just buy different putters that match the characteristics you need.

Obviously putters have different characteristics, technology, feel, etc..  However, I'm a big believer that being a good putter is more about confidence than any other factor.  So when it comes down to it I choose a putter by what gives me the most confidence.  

 

Confidence for me is a confluence of factors look at address, how feel in my hands (weight, length, grip size), feel/feedback at contact, etc.  When I choose a putter its because all of these come together and give me the confidence when I am testing the putter, and one putter just seems to stand above the others. So its not necessarily something I quantify or look at each factor and rate a putter for each category, just what overall I am most comfortable with. 

 

Some people may have confidence that stems from personal experience, others have confidence from quantifiable data like the great testing done here at MGS, and others may look at some great putters on tour and have confidence in a Scotty or Taylormade spider because its what the best putters on tour are choosing.  

 

No right or wrong answer.

SAM putt lab changed this for me too. Had my first experience with it 2 weeks ago. Gaming a 2ball fang currently and I love it from inside 15 feet. During my session i tested a odyssey #7 and a sigma g tyne. The tyne proved to be the best putter for me. My consistency numbers were above 92% for EVERY measure with every putter. But, rather than buy a tyne i decided to toy with the fang. I put a superstroke grip on it and added 20 grams of weight to it. I basically am trying to make it the same as the tyne minus the design. Initial testing appears to back up the changes. Need to get the changed 2ball on SAM again soon.

If I go to a store and grab putters to try, looks is first. Next, and the primary factor for choosing, would be feel. I hate a hard feel off of the face. If a putter feels at ALL firm, I put it right back. At this point, based on messing around at Miles of Golf the other day, most Ping putters would be "out" for me. Way too firm.

I would have to be fitted, but looks first, then feel.

Funny... I did something similar ... got fit for a very pricey Scotty and going with the very-similar-version Odyssey....

Looks don't really matter to me.  It's all about feel and performance.  The SeeMore FGP that I currently use isn't the prettiest thing in the world, but that thing works.

I look at each of the things below in order. It has to pass each one before moving to the next.

 

Weight - it needs to be heavy enough for long putts but not too heavy that I am missing short putts by a mile.

 

Feel - I want a smooth soft feel. Too harse of a feel makes it feel like I am striking the ball. Too muted does not give me proper feedback of where I hit the putt on the face or how hard I hit it.

 

Look- it's this putter easy to get on line. Is it too distracting and causing my eyes to follow the putter back. Do I like this putter at address

 

I try to keep it as simple as possible with each of theses. Weight and look are pretty easy to judge quickly if it fits me or not.

soft feel, rolls end over end once at impact and holds its line. feedback on mid center hits. design and weight. small blade or mid mallet is wat i prefer. if solid shallow milled grind or deep milled face. i can do insert but has to feel soft and rolls like milled face putter nice soft steel.

This is why I asked to hear more. We have read threads about edel fitting and the more people understand how putter fittings work the better chance they will have to find the right putter

First off for me it has to be eye appeal as in how it sits at address. Good example and this is just me any Odyssey blade sits too closed to my eye. Second thing is the feel it has to feel right. Now as far as weight goes that is not an initial impression because  as most of you know  I am not scared to apply the lead tape. On the feel thing and again this is just me I do not like any kind of elastomer insert or milled face. Usually I am not a mallet type man even though I have been messing around with an Odyssey #7 in our pro shop recently. Actually that putter sits good to my eye just have not got the feel down yet with the insert.

But lately my old rusty Santa Fe has been hot since I changed my grip with my hands and besides I have around 100 different putters mostly vintage. As best as I can recall the "Newest" putters I have in my collection are a YES! Dianna (milled c groove face) and a Nike 003 Method (also a funky milled face) both of those were freebies. Most of my stuff is old Pings, old Bullseyes, lots of Spalding T.P. Mills and old Macgregor 8802 style putters. Really if I was to buy a new putter I might would go with the #7
